Peter arrived the following morning as directed. The gates looked intimidating, and the sun was fucking hot as Hell. He rolled up his sleeves, and adjusted the messenger bag hanging off his shoulder; almost, almost effortless to carry despite the amount of medical supplies he brought.

There were two men leaning against the wall. Cross, and some guy he never saw before. Peter had to restrain himself from punching the bastard (Cross) in the face for what he did to Claire.

Claire. The letter was in his pocket. Kept safe, kept close. Like a talisman that will get him out of this in good shape.

He took a deep breath.

Luki was giggling beside him and bouncing toward Cross. Peter followed, somewhat reluctantly, somewhat anxiously.

"Oh, very excited," he replied in monotone. "Can't wait for the carnage."

Do it for Nathan and Claire.

He went in.

Cloud was not entirely fond of General Cross for the sole reason that it was technically his fault that they were in this mess in the first place. However, Cross looked as though he was willing to fix it -- and that was enough incentive to follow. He had spent weeks floundering in the dark, trying to find a lead, but grasped nothing. At this point, if he didn't join in this little rescue team, he was afraid that he might never be able to see him as useful again.

But above all else, he had promised Yuffie he'd find her. Cloud would not easily break a promise to someone as important as her.

And so, he arrived at the rendezvous spot the general had designated with his sword and back in his regular clothing. He took a quick glance around at the others before instinctively moving closer to Fou when he saw her, but didn't say a word.

Like a rebellious teenager skulking out of his bedroom to catch a late-night party against his "father's" wishes, so Kanda had slipped out of his room early that morning. He maintained his distance from the rest of the group, watching closely. He would follow them, find out where they were going. If people knew he was there...well, the only person he was really worried about was Tiedoll. And he wasn't necessarily worried about the man. Kanda would burn that bridge when he came to it ( ... )

To be honest, this had worked out well. Who knew whether or not he would have been included on this expedition if he were not stuck to General Cross Marian at the moment, holding hands for all eternity. (Hopefully not. He was tired of showering with the General; he was tired of having no shampoo left to himself; and he was especially tired of red hair being left in the comb!) But at least he was rescuing Rhode--despite the somewhat ironic fact that the General had, in the first place, shot her face.

So he said.

So Rhode said, too, and she wasn't in the habit of lying. To him, anyway ( ... )

Reever wasn't entirely sure what he was doing. This wasn't his job. This was Exorcist work, or possibly a job for Finders, but it wasn't his job. Up until now his job had consisted mainly of research, difficult stuff, but quiet, and kept enclosed in a nice clean laboratory with computers and spreadsheets and soda. God, he missed soda.

Except then everything had changed, and he'd got a look at what things were like on the front lines, the kind of shit the Exorcists had to deal with every day and--his opinion of what 'the job' had consisted of ...changed. Maybe none of them deserved to be safe the way his scientists were. Maybe everyone ought to know what it was like to stare a Skull in the face. He could still feel the thing's sharp finger against his forehead, fully prepared to take his life, turn his brain inside out, turn him into one of them.He stuck close to Cross Marian. The general had been a difficult man to track down after all, and Reever couldn't help being the least bit curious about him. He wondered if all the rumors were ( ... )
