Questions about Catholicism

Sep 10, 2010 18:04

I'm working on a story in which one of the characters comes from a very devout Catholic family. The problem is I have absolutely no personal experience with any form of Christianity.

I've been researching it (mainly on Wikipedia and little_details), but what I'm looking for is more the personal experiences of people who've been raised under that religion, and ( Read more... )

help plz?

I'm not Catholic. I'm not really anything anymore (gave up religion awhile ago) but I do consider myself to be very devout in my faith.

I have gone through a lot of struggle in the past with my faith and my sexuality. I'm totally open to answering anything you would ask of me.

My problem is two of my characters (a bisexual man and a gender-queer girl who identifies as a lesbian) were both raised Catholic. So I'm basically wondering:

1.) Did your religion/faith(?) make it harder for you to realize what your sexual orientation was? Did it make it harder to accept it?

2.) Did it affect your opinion of casual sex?

3.) If you're out to your family, how did they take it?

Also, how has it affected your opinion on porn, cross-dressing, and poly-relationships?

Growing up, religion was never really discussed in our family. My dad is Buddhist, and we had a family alter in our house, but it was always something for the adults in our house, us kids never paid attention. So I really have no idea what it would be like to go through life looking at things through the lens of any sort of faith. Is there a point I'm missing? What do you think I need to know to write these characters believably?

Oh! Forgot one!

How did/does your faith affect your opinion on the validity of other religions? Were you encouraged to learn about other religions, or discouraged from learning about them? Were they all lumped into "the occult"?

Hit me up! I'm born and raised Roman Catholic, ten years of school under nuns and priests, etc. However, I've gone to a very liberal university, away from home, so what I'll tell you will only be from my mindset during high school. Or something.

1) I've been in two. First was run by sisters, the next was run by priests. A typical day would start with the the morning prayer (the whole school is to join, and is led over the speakers), then the flag ceremony. In October we start with the first mystery of the rosary for that day. Every first Friday of the month we have first Friday mass, so we skip first period for that. (It's said that if you complete all the first Friday masses in a year, you get a wish.)

During elementary school we had this worship service for thirty minutes every Monday.

In both schools we've had prayers before every class, prayers before recess, prayers after recess, too. If you eat lunch in school you have to stop whatever you're doing once the 12 o' clock Angelus rolls along - you get pretty bad looks if you keep walking or eating. There's the six o' clock Angelus, too, but I hardly stay in school for that long :P ( ... )
