[locked to hesdead_jim] First Semester

Christine tapped her stylus against the table as she finished up the final chapter that would be covered on her upcoming exam. She wasn't too worried, even if it was her first exam as a Starfleet cadet. She had aced biology in high school, and everything they'd been learning so far was pretty much a review of the same. The only thing about which ( Read more... )

Leonard knew library etiquette for Gods sake. He was a grown man, not a teenage boy so when he found himself shushed in the middle of the library for answering Jim Kirk incredulously when his friend again sent him a message warning him that he had company and needed a few hours of peace to enjoy her and then send her away ( ... )

She narrowed her eyes at him, even though he wasn't looking at her. Taking her books, being a jerk about it, and not even looking at her? Ooo, he was going to get it. What made things even worse was that she could tell he was Southern like her. She felt that Southerners ought to stick together, but not if one happened to be a no good, low down, dirty book thief.

"Like anyone's 'round to hear that I said that," she said with a huff. Pointing at his books, she continued, "Those are the additional readings for Olson's class. Some other people would like to read them before the test too, you know. You can't have 'em all at once."

Never mind that she had been about to take them all herself. It wasn't like she thought anyone else would actually go out of their way to read them.

"So you get th' pleasure of his class too?" he asked her, finally daring a look round at her, though his eyebrow was still cocked on upwards.

"An' neither can you. Don't think I've not noticed you followin' after me after every book," he commented, a hint of amusement to his voice. Only a hint, of course.

"I won't be long with them. Won't be learnin' anythin' from them new. Jus' need the right page numbers and quotes to get by."

"I do. All first year med students do." She wasn't a fan of that raised eyebrow. It made him look like he was saying "I'm better than you and you should count it as a great honor that I'm addressing you." Jerk.

"Oh, don't even--" she began. It was completely true, but she wasn't going to let him know that. Luckily, she was a fast thinker. "I was going after each to flip through them and see which I wanted to read the most. Or at least, that was my plan. What'd you expect me to do when each place I went didn't have the book I wanted to look at? I hoped I could find at least one."

Shifting from one foot to the other, she tried to hide her worry. "Think we're gonna need to know specific page numbers?"

"Too many of 'em. They won't last though. Either that, or they'll be perpetual low grade Doctors for th' rest of their career," he commented. He, of course, fully expected to make CMO in a short few years. He had the experience, the ability and the know how.

"That's what I figured." She was sure she'd rise above all the rest in the nursing program, and in a few years, she'd be the Head Nurse on the Enterprise. Not any other ship; only the new flagship Starfleet was building would do for her. And she didn't think she was being cocky either. She went for what she wanted, and that was the goal she'd set for herself. In later life, she might even go back to school and become a doctor. But she'd conquer nursing first.

Now that she had her books, and she found that he was both already a doctor and someone who agreed with her, she was starting to think he might not be a jerk after all.

"So... you're not really from Florida, are you?"

"No, I'm not. Georgia born an' bred," he commented with a small tilt of his head towards her. "An' we already worked out you're a Southerner. Which part?"

Georgia was a lot better in her eyes than Florida. It was no New Orleans, but she supposed she'd have to forgive him for that. "You were born on the wrong side 'a the Mississippi." Swelling with pride, she answered, "I'm from down in the bayou. N'awlins, technically. Though can you believe that the other day, one of my instructors said he couldn't understand me and I had ta lose the accent." She rolled her eyes. "'Least you understand me."

He hesitated for a moment before settling on his reply. He'd been open with Jim because he'd been so wounded, so panicked. He didn't know if he should spill his feelings and history so freely with someone else he'd just met.

Mind you, if hadn't scared Jim away.

"I don't have one anymore. I got nothin' left from my divorce. Starfleet's th' only place left to go."

"Oh. Sorry if I kicked the hornet's nest there. Shouldn't 'a been so nosy." She hugged her books to her chest, not feeling awkward, but just a bit guilty for making him bring it up.

"It's all right. Ain't like I can avoid it," he replied with a shrug of his shoulders. He paused then for a moment. "I'm hopin' when yer done with those books you'll let me have 'em for a quick scan through."

"Can do," she replied with a nod. Rummaging through her bag, she pulled out her pen. "What's your name, so I can put 'em in your mailbox?"

"You an' me both," he muttered. He'd give Jim an hour. Nothing more, nothing less. He was usually done by then, and the girl was usually on her way out.

"That a fact? I wonder if they're hangin' out together then." She looked him over for a moment, thinking. If he already knew all the material, it'd be great to have him quiz her on it.

"We should get together sometime and study then. 'Specially if our roommates are both the type that keep us out of our own rooms."

"Entirely possible. Jim Kirk is my room mate. He makes... friends, easily. Which means my extended study hours," he commented, gathering up his books once more.

He considered it for a moment and slowly nodded. Maybe that wouldn't be a terrible idea. "Could work."

"Really? The Jim Kirk?" She snickered, since that cadet had quite the reputation already, and not just because he was George Kirk's son. "Poor you."

"Could? Sugah, with me it'll work out perfectly. If you already know this stuff backwards and forwards, you'll know it sideways too once we're done studyin'."

"Don't know. You got any suggestions?" he asked her. His knowledge of campus didn't stray much further than the bars, the library, medical and the other basic classes he'd had to sign up for.

"There's these benches under some trees on the back side of the library, and it isn't too cold out today. We just gotta see if they've been taken already." She again led the way, this time towards the back doors of the library and down the stairs. She pointed to the row of benches which, sure enough, were mostly occupied, but there was one set apart from the others that was free and she made a beeline for it.

"All right," he knew of where she meant and simply followed her. They made it to the free bench before anyone else and he sat himself down, books settled next to him.

She settled herself on the other side, dropping her bag between them and pulling out her PADD. "'Kay, so where do ya wanna start? Should we do a thing where we quiz each other, or do you have anything specific you wanna do?"
