I keep thinking that I need to suck it up and write paranormal romance, because I could SO churn out tons of books and make a decent living off it...and I wouldn't even have to hate myself as much as if I wrote standard romance books, because you're allowed to be witty in paranormal chick-lit!
One of my college friends had a professor in the English department who paid for her doctorate by writing trashy romance novels. It doesn't pay well, by publishing standards, but when you're cranking out a novel every 3 weeks, suddenly only getting $1-3k per book doesn't exactly matter...
Now if only I can get past my hatred of purple prose and my insistence that my writing actually be DECENT....
I love Nef, too. You're right - I felt as if the whole thing was mostly a set-up book to give us a feel for the characters and the sorts of situations they can find themselves in. I suppose one could make the argument that this one is sort of low-level because Mendoza herself is a newbie with mortals, but that's probably giving a bit too much credit. Book 2 is in my stack for next week, so we'll see.
