Feeding the Birds

Dec 20, 2021 20:52

For the past few weeks I have been putting out bird seed in a cylindrical feeder outside the window near my computer. I also stock a wire-cage type feeder with suet cakes. I have inadvertently been feeding the birds higher up on the food chain as well. They come to my yard to hunt the smaller birds that feed at my feeders. Yesterday there was ( Read more... )

Thanks, Randy! I do enjoy bird watching, though here in the city there is little variety to what I can see.

The line you like may be very graphic, but it speaks of the brutality of nature, where animals kill each other to survive. Stephen King writes of the brutality of man ~not so different, I suppose. LOL!

I feed birds year-round and yes, it does attract this or that predator, especially since there are masses of birds in my garden. The other year, a saker falcon landed there and the mass hysteria that ensued made me take cover indoors. It was a scene right out of Hitchcock. LOL

I had to look up "saker falcon". That is a BIG bird! No wonder it caused such a commotion in your garden! A wing-span over a meter!

the mass hysteria that ensued made me take cover indoors. It was a scene right out of Hitchcock.

Since you said that I have to use my Hitchcock & bird themed icon, spoofing Psycho. LOL

I've never seen such a big falcon! I first took it to be a buzzard until I got a closer look, then later googled and discovered this species. Wish I'd had my camera with me ( ... )

Very cool, but poor pigeon. :o

I still occasionally see the Bald Eagle flying in the area. :)

Hawks are big, regal-looking birds. I think they are cool too. Here in the city, pigeons are commonplace. Some people call them "flying rats". But I'm glad I didn't see the hawk actually kill the pigeon, I just watched him eating it.

That is really cool that you can see Eagles locally! :-)
I have never seen a Bald Eagle in the wild even though they nest an hour west of here in the Montezuma Marshes. I have heard that they will sometimes come into Syracuse during the winter to catch fish in the still open water of Onondaga Creek, next to the biggest local mall. Maybe I will go looking for them there some time this winter.

There are a lot of pissed off people in Rochester, Mn.
There is some development going on and they cut down one tree in the area. The only tree that happened to have a Bald Eagles nest in it. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure if the eagle/eagles I have seen are from there or down along the Mississippi bluff area.

This sounds like environmental terrorism! :-/

Lovely to see the larger birds, but a shame they can't just eat seed as well!

It's just the way of nature. Besides, the hawks keep the pigeon population from getting out of control.
