So, according to the new interview up on Mugglenet, Aurthor Weasley was the one who got the reprieve, and that was all the way back in book five

The need to have an unhappy foil to Bill/Fleur's marriage?
I think that may have been R/T's purpose either way. Not that I think they were meant to be unhappy forever, they were meant to be happy after Lupin and Tonks got a better handle on his their problems and the baby was born.
I'm convinced Tonks was created to be Lupin's love interest, maybe even conceived at the same time, or a little after JKR thought of Lupin. There's no way, in JKR's mind anyway, they were thrown together at random. Not that that's on topic.
What made her change?
I'm a little confused by his death now, we've already had "life sucks, and then you die" and "war is hell" deaths. Why kill him when he finally got some joy and happiness in his life? Wouldn't it have been more profound that the man whose highlight of his life was his school years confronts the self-loathing and hatred that was instilled in him from years of anti-werewolf propaganda and finally finds love and happiness with his wife and child?
Eesh, I hope Tonks wasn't brought in just to be a love interest. I like Tonks, but I loathe when characters exist only to be another character's love interest. But then she was also a female auror that was closer to Hermoine and Ginny's age group, she was also sort of a role model for them in a few ways.
When I say unhappy, I mostly mean in comparison to Bill/Fleur, who had a bit of time to themselves before having a kid and, er, got to live.
When Arthur Weasley almost died in Order of the Phoenix, I exhausted nearly all of my tears on him. I was distraught over it and SO relieved when he lived.
I would trade him in a heartbeat for Remus. If I knew it'd ensure Remus surviving the series. It'd be a devestating thing -- and losing Arthur and Sirius in one blow would be terrible -- but come on. ARTHUR OR REMUS? JKR, WHY?
I think what bothers me is that there was no long-time plan for Remus to die. There was a possibility she'd let him be happy. My guess? Teddy was planned from the start.
Except in her original plan, Teddy would have been born closer to the end of Deathly Hallows. And Tonks and Remus would have lived.
But, no.
We have to KILL. REMUS.
I was more okay with Remus being dead when I thought she'd planned it.
To round out Harry's 'marching off to death' party?I'd say it was this one. Have the 'full set', so to speak (aww, I was a bit sad for Peter that he was left out). And then of course Tonks had to die too because I don't think she really could have lived on without Remus
( ... )
I'm sitting here in my corner imagining that after a few decades worth of floating around in the afterlife, Remus and Sirius can maybe forgive Peter in light of how his hesitation to carry out Voldermort's orders helped Harry.
Call me completely crazy, but I thought the purpose of books was to tell an entire story..and to not piss people off so much they want an encyclopedia afterwards to feel better.
I refuse to buy it. She should have said what she wanted to say in the books and not waste 5,000 pages in a tent.

But I am so much more angry to know that he was a surprise death.
