Of course, the difference being that Sexson is a first baseman and Tek is a catcher. While Tek has been abysmal at the plate, there are simply different offensive standards for backstops and first basemen. Sexson's level of production at first base, usually a premium power position, was unacceptable, while for a catcher Varitek is simply bad. His defense and relationship with the pitchers mitigate his offensive woes to a certain extent.
Does that mean I'm a Varitek apologist? No. Just to point out that it's not a valid comparison /at all/!
Also, the Mariners stink worse than my 5-year-old gym socks, so they're trying to cut payroll and give playing time to younger players. Not so with Boston.
First basemen are a dime a dozen, and everyone's got a bunch in their minors. Catchers, not so much. The Sox would have to be out-of-their-minds crazy to release 'Tek in the middle of the season like this, and they aren't out-of-their-minds crazy.
I agree with this most likely not applying to Tek. We all know how much value Francona, Theo, and Co. place in his ability behind the plate, to the point where I think it's safe to say that they're probably not nearly as bothered by his recent slump as Tek himself is. The Sox know that Tek's never been a Manny or a Big Papi, and they're okay with that, as long as he keeps up that fabulous relationship with his pitchers.
