So in my position as a paid mall rat on Sunday night, my manager got me into a conversation about sexuality. Specifically, about the possible sexual orientation of one of my co-workers. Lots of people don't have trouble with gays until it's one of "their own." In this case, Tara seems to take "black women" as "her own" (which would explain why she got so upset about you dating a black guy). Also, this is a WOMAN rather than the district manager you mentioned--Tara is probably thinking, like lots of egotistical straight women, that a gay/bi woman will at some point attack her sexually, or at the very least ask her on a date (which to some women is insulting rather than flattering, the way it is to people with brains ( ... )

This is more than telling a secret, this is outing, and when you're not sure of the mindset of the person you're telling, it can be dangerous.

Worse than just outing, it's *unconfirmed* outing. Alexis never said definitively that she was gay, at least not to me. It was all "What if?" And Tara's comments to me, when she initially brought up the subject, gave me the impression that she was deducing a conclusion of lesbianism on her own, from some ambiguous things that Alexis had said, rather than that the girl had actually *come out* to her
