Torchwood: 2.12

Ugh, Anne Rice makes fandom wank again. I guess it's been awhile since the last time? Her crazy hurts me. Sometimes I have deep-seated secret worries that I have too much fannish entitlement syndrome when it comes to bandom (and I might, actually, I just try not to air it in public) but then I realize that really, nothing is ever going to ( Read more... )

Yes! That's three halfs but I don't care!

Although I reject the notion that his attraction to Jack was foremost in his mind at that moment. I mean, he loved Lisa enough to RISK THE PLANET for her. And was he even bisexual before Jack?? I just see this scared young moron pimping himself at the mercy of Capt. Jack.

I dunno. Their relationship continues to turn me on and creep me out in equal measure.

Yeah, Anne Rice turned into a complete disappointment. I don't mind that she changed what she wanted to write about, no problem, we all do, but it kills me the way that everything gets couched in higher than, better than, I know the true and only way dogma. Even before she was born again and everything.

I quit on The Vampire Chronicles after Memnoch the Devil. I used to read everything she wrote in order of release, but I got stuck on Violin (never made it past the third chapter despite four attempts).

I have read EVERYTHING and I have read most of the VC (all except the last three books, I think) multiple times and I think her later VC books were hit or miss (I never loved much of her other stuff except for The Witching Hour), but when she went back to Lestat in Blood Canticle and didn't deal with ANYTHING that would have provided closure for any other character (which was desperately needed for Louis after Merrick), I just couldn't deal with it. I was way, way too emotionally invested.

I was even willing to try her new stuff because I was fiercely loyal for a long time. I have the first Jesus book, but I haven't read it because her new holier than thou attitude does rub me the wrong way.

I never read blood canticle, because I really wanted to keep the characters as they were. Now I just avoid Anne Rice, I can't help but feeling sad about what happened to her.

The last Torchwood episode with all the flashbacks was pure gold. It was brilliant and I so want to read fanfic about Jack and the triggerhappy creepy lady.

I agree that Ianto got much more profile this season. His flashback was adorable. They really made something out of Owen too.

I agree. When Anne Rice really went kind of crazy it was after her husband died, so I'm sure it was grief - and that was not when the religion stuff started because that was starting as far back as Memnoch. So I feel bad for her. But that doesn't make Blood Canticle any less upsetting. (Though I guess it could have been worse. I'm more upset by what's not in it than by what is).

I like what they've done with all the characters in Torchwood. I'm really invested in them and their relationships now when at the beginning of the season I mostly just cared about Jack.

There was obviously so much to love about Ianto's flashback (Jeans! Homoeroticism! begging! Obsession with Jack's jacket! Competence! Bitchiness! "Torchwood London would have had it in the truck!") but the bit that makes me flail is how he begs to get into Torchwood, and why. He's so very calm about it, just breezing through the mention of Lisa's death, and only losing his cool for a second - before getting it right back. "Same time tomorrow, then." He's, in his head, got the situation totally under control. Things went badly and that's very unfortunate - but he will fix them. In his mind, there is no way in hell that he's not getting into Torchwood. Failure is just not possible. And, goddamn, it nearly works by the sheer force of his stubbornness. That kind of drive is not only fascinating but a little creepy. Also, it makes his reaction to Lisa's death seem less melodramatic to me.

IANTOOOOOO.

Many things about Ianto are fascinating, yet creepy, very much including his relationship with Jack.

Ianto was awesome in this episode. I am sorry I ever called him boring.
