Lim clicked her mobile shut, pocketing it.

"Problem?" Callas asked as she negotiated their way through traffic.

"Aside from you not telling me why you thought I should go out with him?" Lim asked.

"I told you, I knew him from University, and I thought the two of you'd get along."

"He's a little..."

"Eager to please?" Callas said. "Always been that way, far as I can see. That the problem?" He's got a little Cantonese in those veins. My folks hated him on account of his Macedonian grandmother. Though he at least introduced me and Melita.

Lim sat there, silent.

"He proposed?"

"No," Lim said. "He said he found us a pet. Something 'appropriate to the year we find ourselves in.'"

"I think this' the Year of the Tiger."

Lim nodded. "Has to be stuffed."

Callas shook her head and, once she was done glaring at the idiot who cut her off, "He's allergic to stuffing - not a pretty sight at carnivals."

"Oh."

"While you're talking to the family, I'll put the Zoo on speed-dial."

Thanks.

later that afternoon...

"Hi," he said back after she parked, got out, and stood by him at the apartment door.

"You said I needed to see this," Lim said.

He nodded. "It's all a bit hurried, I know," he apologized, taking one hand in his. "And I wouldn't have done this, not so soon, but a mate of mine called up and said he found the poor devil in the road...and, well, I did my grad thesis on them, so he figured I'd like it.

"And, well, I like you, Jung...and if you see this and decide you want nothing more to do with me and-or with it, I understand completely, and you'll never see hide nor hair of me or -"

"Is it inside?" she asked.

He nodded, and opened the door for her.

Lim saw it as it walked out of the shadows, and only long-standing habit kept her jaw from dropping. That and a feeling that this was far too surreal.

The pet yawned, jaw stretching far before closing again, and walked slowly up to lick her hand. Lim stood there, staring at the Tasmanian Tiger.
