Toxteth Cemetery

So having a hyperactive border collie for a housemate means I have to take her on super!power!walks after work each afternoon. I take her to the wide expanses of Sefton Park via a shortcut through Toxteth Cemetery.

Welp. I love cemeteries, as most of you know. And this one possibly has my ancestors in it (I have found Gordons and Lowrys but I like ( Read more... )

Wow, this place is really gorgeous. The headstones are works of art.

They're so beautiful. I am kind of a douche and sad that modern gravestones aren't so beautiful.

Absolutely gorgeous pictures, and the history of it all is so fascinating. I honestly had no idea about Liverpool's involvement in the American Civil War!

I have to admit that the Confederate soldier was kind of Anji-bait. I so wanted to see what you thought of it!

My dad is very much into American history and he told me stories about the connection between our city and the South as I grew up. I've only just started looking into it more - there's an exhibit in the Liverpool museums currently, about Liverpool's role in the conflict.

I find it so interesting. Here's a brief BBC article about it:

And the Liverpool museums collection:

Like you, I find cemeteries fascinating. The memorial inscriptions link directly to a past, when the afterlife promised a better existence than the worldly one. Isn't it marvellous how sympathetic we can be to the grief of others we could never know? I can't read a child's gravestone without uttering words of consolation. It certainly makes me feel grateful for modern medical care. In Victorian times, Jenn or I or both of us would not have survived her birth.

Lovely pics.

Those are so beautiful! I love the one where you photographed the interior through the boards. Is this the same church you told me about once, which was bombed in the war?

When we do get to come and visit you, I would loooove it if you'd take us to this cemetery. :)

So many great churches in Liverpool, I have to say.

Oh, you're both always more than welcome! Whenever you want! :D
