Given how good my child was at getting past child proofing ... don't let it run its course. Tell him we don't play with electrical outlets because they burn/bite/whatever you want, and distract him with something more fun to play with.
It does, but it passes. Just stay on top of them, keep going to the doc to make sure the ear infection is actually cleared when the meds are finished. Love him and love him and love him. And it'll all be better soon.
(I find telling myself things like that helps. Especially when I'm about to lose my mind from stress and lack of sleep and everything else :) )
Actually, as usual when it comes to my kid, I'm under a lucky star. When he's sick he sleeps a L-O-T. I just hate the unhappy baby part. It would be easier if I felt like I could explain to him and have him understand... (I do explain, but while I believe babies understand more than they're often given credit for, I doubt he understands my explanation of the anatomy of the inner ear... ;o))
Any evidence of it being a milk/lactose issue? I know my nephews had that problem and when my sister took milk products away, their infections dropped dramatically. Or it could have nothing to do with that.
Nope. I don't let him have any dairy yet, unless it's completely incidental to something and I've just overlooked it (occasionally I forget something has a pat of butter in it, etc.) Even with that, he's still 90+% exclusively breastfed. I don't get much dairy either.
Theoretically, ear infections aren't really contagious (although some things can encourage ear infections, like colds). I had lots of them when I was a kid, and I wasn't a daycare kid. Mike also had them. I think Zoe's problem was simply any fluid in her ear, at any time (bath water, mucous back up, whatever) wasn't able to drain because of her huge adenoids, so it became a breeding ground for bacteria.
Given Mike's and my history of ear infections, I should have been more aware of the possibility, but it had been such a long time I just didn't think of it. And I never even had my tonsils out, so it never occurred to me how messed up that whole system can get.
They make a neat gadget that measures the fluid level in the ear. We used it regularly with Zoe, and still do occasionally, just to make sure everything's good. If it seems like E has a tendency towards ear infections, or getting stubborn ones that don't go away, it might be something you'd want to look into.
couple questions...rdhdsnippetApril 4 2006, 13:45:21 UTC
So why do they tell me not to bring him to school? (I mean, not that I would have anyway, the poor bean felt awful.)
John had tubes in his ears as a kid. I would, of course, prefer to avoid that. I never had any ear trouble until I got older when swimmer's ear became a big issue.
Where'd you get the gadget / what's it called, do you know?
At what point did you start to worry about Z's weight gain (or lack thereof)?
ugghhh sounds like you guys are having a terrible time. Our best thoughts and prayers are with you both. I am with Aelf in that ear infections are not contagious so please dont let that keep you away. Give us a call when you have a break.
