At work, our office manager's had to take time off to care for her child, who it turns out was confirmed as having swine-flu. 30 confirmed cases at his school, which had to shut down. Pupils off sick as you'd expect, but AFAIK nothing life-threatening. Child is now mostly recovered, and office manager is back at work ( Read more... )

So, a week or two ago I posted asking if anyone knew about the Kiva website. No-one really did, but people were interested, so I did some research.

Has anyone on the flist heard of Kiva, the microfinancing site? It came to my attention recently, and the idea looks good pretty good in theory but I wonder how well it works in practice. Can anyone confirm they're not just a pretty website fronting for loan sharks in the third world?

Looks like I'll have my savings back in another month or so. I'm guessing the government is keen for savers to get their money back in time for Christmas?
