The frustration Shaz felt might have been from her soul knowing that she could have stopped a crime in progress but died instead. She had that sense of powerlessness in her job because she was simply the coffee and tea girl to some extent until the moment before she saw stars. The same sort of no power that I think came over her when she was stabbed and dying in her life.

That makes sense, but I just feel her death didn't tie into that as much as Ray and Chris' did their insecurities and issues. And the screwdriver seemed a little out of left field.

Awesome post!

It mirrors a lot of my reactions very closely! :) I do have (my) answers for a couple of your questions though:

And the reasons Viv did what he did was to save his cousin, but why would his cousin be in this universe?

I think that the cousin was Viv's construct, and he was trying to save his cousin because it was something he failed to do in life, and he was trying to force a different resolution, (similar to Alex trying to save her parents in the first series).

What does getting stabbed with a screwdriver in the 90s have to do with why she was so frustrated?

My interpretation of this was that she was actually frustrated with the fact she had been cheated out of her life, and the unfairness of dying so young. The screwdriver was an emotional trigger because it's what killed her, but her dissatisfaction with her "life" was a separate emotional issue over the fact she was robbed of living the life she felt she ought to have had.

Thank you! ;)

That makes a lot of sense. I think I had attributed the presence of Alex's (and Sam's) parents to their comatose state, but it works for everyone, doesn't it? And maybe that's why Viv was when he was, and Annie too. Put in the time when they had to make things right. But people like Ray/Chris/Shaz's issues were more internal and more about who they were than an actual event, so more timeless.

Re: Shaz, though, I just almost feel they could have killed her in another way that was more poignant. Although I guess she had to get stabbed, that was out there already. Hmm.

I would think getting shot and getting stabbed are the most often causes for death of police on the beat? Something overly imaginative with Shaz's death could have been too much, I think. The've overdone it a bit with Ray, in my eyes, to be honest, but at least it goes along neatly with his charachter

another reason to disagree with keats = devil: the letters on BBC's A2A website. even keats has to answer to a higher authority. his super, in the letters, was named nick callahan. on-screen, it's the bloke on the phone.

That's true. Although there's been some argument that he could have just been writing letters and making phone calls in order to back up the DNC cover. Also, on the phone he calls the guy "Dave", which I read was Danny Mays improvising and they joked David Bowie was the devil, but I'd argue that even the guy on the phone is just another piece of the hierarchy.

ray is pegged as dying sometime in 1977. the furniture in his flat is very 70s, and a few others noted he seemed to be watching QE2's silver jubilee celebrations (royal connection), which took place between june 6 and 9, 1977, when he hanged himself. some thought he was watching the start of the FA cup final between liverpool and whoever at old wembley (also 1977).

That's awesome, thanks. I just am too American to have pegged that. ;)

But you do believe that everyone else except for Alex and Sam have died instantly, you argue that's why they have no memories of the actual lives. They don't have those "seconds", hence they have all the time in the world to resolve their issues.

i think luigi fits the bill of professional sent to blend in (and be a confidante for alex). once he was not needed anymore, as everyone bar gene and keats would soon be joining nelson in the arms, he was free to goI think it's safe to assume that Gene went to The limbo when died. The actual limbo, the one that's for everybody not some fantasy place he reconstructed out of his sheer will from scratch. Familiar concept for most religions. Hence the presence and the powers of Keats. You wouldn't place a Devil jr in your happy place. Assuming it's the limbo, everybody get's there and go about their everyday buisiness, resolving their issues, interacting on the way and keeping the society going. It's just that the copper's side is one side of the limbo we getto see, cause it looks fancy on telly. Everyone else have their own equivalent for the Railway Arms I think, it's just beyond the point of the series. (Probably "home"/Italy for Luigi). Basically, I think they have to all be actual dead peeps there, that's only logical, and Gene had ( ... )
