By way of someone else on livejournal I was shown this online journal entry about the subject of the social victimization of women, and I think it's worth linking to it. It reminded me of the situations endemic in all societies, where women are victimized in subtle ways you can't really notice until it hurts. It reminded me of people I know who ( Read more... )

I agree to a point, but I think part of the problem is, a lot of the time this kind of thing happens when the woman is a captive audience, and doesn't have the option of "I have to go." Just from my own experience:

-Went to a party where I didn't know anyone but my ride. My ride disappeared with her boyfriend as soon as we walked in the door. (Fortunately for me the guy bothering me there WAS able to take a hint)

-At work, when the person in question is a customer. (One of the men I had problems with repeatedly came to my job and pretended to shop.)

-In class with the person, assigned seating, and needing to take the same routes between classes.

-In a co-ed dorm right next door to the person in question, when your roommates and his are friends, and your roommates frequently leave the door unlocked so their friends can wander in at will ( ... )

Agree 1000%. There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with standing up for yourself!
