inexpensive transportation option

If you are in the midwest, you might want to consider megabus.com. It's a part of Coach and they're now running buses in the midwest that are much less expensive than Amtrak, and even other bus options.

If you book early, sometimes you can get a fare for as cheap as $1! I checked for Minneapolis, and it's quoting $20 and $25 each way depending on the date and time. They cover MN, WI (sadly, not Madison), IL, OH, IN, and maybe one or two other places. I've taken them from Chicago to Minneapolis and back, and while they're not glamorous, they are cheap.

converting supporting to attending

i think it's perfectly reasonable for us to let you convert your supporting to a full membership based on the cost of the membership when you bought the supporting. basically, i'd say that if you made it and forked over $20 more ($15 to the current $35), you'd be set. it's the least we can do to acknowledge early supporters.

and surely there are lovely people in MPLS who'd sit on your dog for you?
