It's confession time.

Ohhh.. That is very nice. Mmmm.. I wonder if that would work in that random patch of ground in the front of my house where I had to rip the dead bush out last year?

As long as you get a few hours of sun there, it should be fine. Depending on what kind of effect you're interested in, you could get a smallish (3' x 3') shrub form or go with one of the bigger varieties and gradually prune it up into a sort of fountain shape. I like the ones with dark and/or variegated leaves so that they're interesting when they aren't blooming (i.e. most of the time).
