I've never read an early-season Spike/Buffy story (in the sense of them actually being in a relationship) that I find completely convincing. That doesn't mean I don't think it can be done, but I've never found a story where the writer's done it to my satisfaction. Which would entail no spells, curses, time travel, etc.; just pure raw character ( Read more... )

Hee! I just came from that post. I have to admit early season spuffy is a very hard sell for me. I'm sure it can be done well, but doing it that way means changing huge amounts of canon. And I like canon!

But I found myself surfing over to the fics in question, just because.

::wipes away perfect tear:: My season 2 Spuffy fic didn't satisfy. ::sniff:: Guess I'll go eat worms.

Yours is definitely one of the ones that made me suspend my disbelief the least! :D

You know, this has been making me puzzle something out.

I've always thought of suspension of disbelief as something that happens when you start reading a fic. So it's total. But as you're reading, if things start to go awry, it jars the suspension. So total suspension is what's needed to go into a story and immerse yourself in fiction--the real is what happens in real life, suspension of disbelief is needed for you to read a story and believe it's 'real'. But when bad characterization or what-have-you mess with the in-story believability, then your disbelief returns to you as your reading. Because you can no longer accept the story--you disbelief is no longer suspended and the story is no longer 'real'.

While I prefer season five fic, I understand that people want to explore the characters in different seasons. And yeah, I find it takes a bunch of suspension of disbelief when reading those kinds of fic. But wrong to write them? Uh...why? I will more than likely skip over a fic (unless it comes highly recommended) that says it's season two/three/four, because as you said, it is usually something either non-cony, spell/time-travel/etc-y, or totally out of character. But I have read and mostly enjoyed some as well. There is no reason people shouldn't write them. (Though, I do find it funny when Spuffy shippers are slightly squicked by Spuffy season two fic, because Buffy was underage. Uh...Angel is a great deal older than Spike...)

Honestly, Buffy being underaged is the last reason to be squicked...

I think the Spuffy shippers who are squicked by the Buffy/Spike age difference in S2 are ALSO squicked by the Buffy/Angel age difference in S2. I've never heard someone who liked Bangel complain about the age difference for Spuffy.

Well, they have so much else to complain about. Maybe they just never make it down the list to the age difference. *g*

I've written two S3 Spuffy fics, both of which I'm happy with. If others get their tails in a twist about Early!Spuffy, well, that's their right. Just as it's my right to have a fondness for my fics.

I almost feel like it's 2001 again, sneaking over to Ducks' Babble Board to marvel at all the frothing Spike-hate. *g*

*can hardly believe you dared say it out loud*

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an incredible urge to write S3 Spuffy.

ME TOO - I was saying to shapinglight that I feel an alternate Lover's Walk caper coming on...

I kind of want to make it passable as the first chapter of your great alt S3 novel (without the necessity for an actual novel, of course)...
