I normally make ankle-height naalbinded socks, because that's how high the Coppergate and Uppsala socks are. Has anyone tried making the knee-high 12th century version?

Yesterday at Lochmere Midwinter Revel, a few different Peers suggested I go out for the Kingdom A&S Persona Pentathlon sponsored by the Kingdom Laurels. I know I've seen one extant example of a satin stitch whitework embroidered neckband on a ruff. I seem not to have written down where I saw it, however, and this distresses me, as now all I know I have are blackwork designs and pulled work; I did blackwork last year and I don't know how well drawn thread work is going to look on a neckband where I ( Read more... )

Based on advice from evilnicola I'm modifying my design from a closed-pleat version to more open pleats, as seen on Battista's Unknown Man of 1570-1575. I've decided that simpler edging will appeal to more fencers, so at the moment I'm going with something pretty plain--really, pretty much Battista's guy's version. At the By the Book Tourney last year, nq3x had suggested that I make a ruff to offer as a prize for next year's tourney, as he uses one to camouflage his gorget.

I've a design from 1581 in mind so far, but is there anything I ought to keep in mind during the design implementation stage?

For decades, I've been hearing this cutesy little saying about sewers and their stashes: she who dies with the most fabric wins. But has anyone with one of these huge stashes seriously considered what happens to all this fabric, and consequently all those awkward little pieces you saved for just the right moment, when they die?
