So, I'm a moderator on this kickass feminist comics forum. And recently, there's been a bit of a kerfluffle in one thread regarding the definition of "butch" and the use of derogatory language to describe women who don't fit traditionally acceptable definitions of femininity, and, inevitably, someone has invoked the descriptive epithet "real woman ( Read more... )

Thank you for this list. It made me blink tears a little bit.

I remember when I was sixteen and I saw Hole play live, Courtney was talking about how she wanted an extra girl in the band but articulated that by saying 'I only wanna see people with ovaries auditioning', and I remember flinching a bit at her narrow definition -- I knew she didn't mean anything by it, but what about the girls I knew who, for whatever reason, didn't fit that criteria? Were they suddenly not girls anymore?
