Does anyone have an idea of how far an army of men can march in a day?  The conditions won't be the best as they're going from Minas Arnor into Mordor and down to the Sea of Nurnen so there will also be wagons for water and other supplies.  There will be some men on horseback, but the majority of men will be on foot.  I was thinking ten to twelve ( Read more... )

Oohhh fabulous, I think this could be very useful for SWG members too! I know all about essays gathering dust on the shelves, if we would just get more hours in a day...

I consulted my military expert (which involved yelling down the stairs, "Hey, how many miles can an army march in a day?). He says the maximum distance he has heard of was 25 miles (travelling about 3 miles per hour). That maximum rate would be on decent roads in friendly territory where you don't have to do a lot of work to set up camp at the end of the day (like dig defenses around your camp). During the infamous march through Georgia, Sherman's men marched 300 miles in 37 days, and that was considered very fast. [Edit-granted, they stopped to burn things down along the way.] So 25 is the maximum, but Lord B. has also seen estimates as low as 10 or 12 miles per day. It is going to vary depending on how much gear the men are carrying, and a smaller group like a company could possibly do 25 mile a day but an army would be lucky to do 15 miles. The other complication is that a group can't do a forced march for a long period of time or the troops will be too tired to fight when they arrive at the destination, so Lord B. would guess ( ... )

Thanks so much... and thank Lord B. for me, too! That should work out just about right with the time I'm allowing for the army to get to their destination and still have things going on back in Minas Arnor on schedule. :)
