I can't believe I only just figured out what this lyric means. That has always been my favorite bright eyes song, and it just struck me the other day what he actually means by that lyric, and I think it's beautiful.

Well i think I'm starting to realize that my selfless nature is detrimental to my own mental health at this point and time. I have become a miserable shell of my former self, and I won't have it anymore. It's time to start looking out for #1. I'm tired of it. I need to move forward in life.
