Chapter Three

It took Quinn a day (or two) to get the nerve to talk to Tina. She didn’t even know why she freaked out so much at that video. She was a girl. She knew what a naked girl looked like. Well she knew what herself naked looked like. It was just... weird looking at another girl like that when she was a girl. Totally not normal. But whatever. She was ready to forget about it so she pushed it out of her mind.

Too much of a coward to call Tina (what the hell was happening to her? Quinn Fabray never acted like this) she sent her a text instead.

Chang, want 2 come over n work on glee?

Tina was in the middle of handing seasoning over to her aunt for the brisket when her phone went off in her pocket. She quickly wiped off her hands and reached for it, wondering if it was Artie. They had agreed to meet up some time this week to exchange Christmas/Hanukkah presents before he went on vacation. That meant he and Brittany had to finish their project by the end of the week, and that would be difficult even if it wasn’t with Brittany, leaving Artie very short on time to just hang out.

But her eyes widened when she saw it was Quinn. Well, I guess that makes sense. We still have a project to work on. She text back asking for her address and telling Quinn to give her a good thirty minutes.

Quinn was relieved when Tina said yes and texted her back the address. She waited in the kitchen as her mom’s latest batch of Christmas cookies finished baking and passed the time by helping with the decorating. Finally thought she heard the doorbell and went off to answer it. She was slightly annoyed that Tina would only have to meet her mom and not an entire entourage, but really it was mostly out of envy. Pulling the door open she said, “Uh, hey.” Don’t be awkward, don’t be awkward!

Tina stood in front of Quinn’s door, a good thirty minutes after she’d texted her. Just like she said. “Hi, um, I’m here,” she said.

Well that had been completely idiotic. Quinn wasn’t blind or mentally retarded. Clearly, Tina was there. She decided not to say anything else until spoken too and simply waited for Quinn to invite her inside, before starting to take off her coat.

Quinn just rolled her eyes, took Tina’s coat and hung it up. “Come on, my mom just made cookies. We can get some before we go to work on our project.” She led Tina to the kitchen, quickly introduced her to her mother (who was busy washing dishes and gave Tina a soapy wave before returning to the sink) then directed her towards her bedroom.

Compared to Tina’s messy room, Quinn’s looked like it was straight out of a Pottery Barn catalogue. The bed was neatly made, the floor was clear, and everything was neatly organized on her shelves. Above her bed was a portrait of Jesus (it had been there since before she was born) and on the other walls were motivational posters and photographs of the Cheerios she had collected over the years.

“So this is my room.” Duh. “You can sit on my bed and I’ll bring my laptop over.” Quinn considered dragging a chair upstairs so they could both sit around her desk but since she wasn’t planning on showing Tina any inappropriate videos and she didn’t have posters of strippers on her wall (in fact, Jesus was watching!) she didn’t think anything inappropriate would happen and therefore the bed would be just fine.

“So did you think of any ideas? I bookmarked a few...” Quinn said as she worked on booting up her computer.

Tina looked around the room, unsurprised at the stark contrast between their room. Not to mention the fact that the giant Jesus poster she had above her bed was giving her a serious case of the wiggins. Even though he father was Catholic, she’d been raised Jewish, and she was barely reform, she just liked the Holidays.

“Um... I had a few artists in mind,” she said, making her way over to Quinn’s bed and sitting lightly on the edge. She looked over at Quinn and scooted back a bit so she could get a look at her computer. “But they’re all, um, kind of obvious I guess.”

Once her computer was finally ready she opened up the internet and went straight to youtube. It took her a few moments to notice that on her recommended videos section there was a few Dita Von Teese videos. So maybe Quinn had gotten curious and looked up more of her stuff... but damn youtube for thinking she was like suddenly into that kind of stuff. Because she wasn’t.

She tried acting normal, hoping that Tina wouldn’t notice and asked, “Which artists? Because I mean, I know you like Lady Gaga since we did her in Glee and stuff and I found a cool medley mash-up thing of her songs...”

Tina tried to hide her smirk when she saw the Dita von Teese videos on Quinn’s recommended section. But she decided not to comment on it, worried Quinn might freak out again and end up leaving... her own house.

“Actually, I was thinking of Lady GaGa,” she said, her interest piqued. “Can I see it?”

Quinn let out a tiny sigh of relief and pulled it up from her favorites. “Well there’s a little bit of guitar in the background but otherwise he is singing a cappella, but I figure we could like record some background music. I don’t know if you play instruments. I’m kind of bad at piano but I’m sure I could figure it out...” She shut up since the video was loaded and let it play, glancing over at Tina every so often to see her reaction. “So...?”

“I can play the guitar a bit. Artie taught me,” she said, letting her voice trail off as the video started. When it finished she nodded enthusiastically. “I like it. A lot. I don’t think it’s what Mr. Schue had in mind exactly, but I think he’d accept it.”

She glanced over at Quinn and was surprised to find their faces awfully close. She’d been leaning over her shoulder a bit to watch the video and scooted away now that it was done to give them both some personal space. “Um, I think Mr. Schue said he also wanted some choreography. I can’t really play guitar and dance at the same time, but I can move around some.”

Noticing that their faces were awfully close as well, Quinn bit her lip nervously and was glad when Tina moved away (she so didn’t need people in her personal space, okay?). “Um, well we could record something. Or we could ask the band to play for us. But you’re right we do need choreography. I just figured we needed to pick a song first. Did you have other suggestions? Or are we going with this?” She was going to feel pretty awesome about herself if she picked the right song on the first try. But then again, she was just awesome so it probably was just instinctual.

“That’s a good idea. I can just play while we practice.” She’d have to look over the video a few times and learn it by ear though. “Yeah. I think we should go with this one. It’s pretty awesome.” Tina’s smile faded when she noticed the smug look on Quinn’s face. “I mean... I just had some artist ideas, but nothing... specific,” she said, slightly embarrassed.

Quinn smirked slightly. Making Tina flustered like this was pretty amusing and she was probably enjoying it a lot more than she should be. “Oh, well okay. I mean it’s a group project after all.”

“Yeah...” Tina replied, thinking of how she could find a way to one-up Quinn. “So what do you want to work on first, finding a way to split up the voice parts, or choreography?” She asked, bringing the conversation around to the two things she knew best. Music and Dance. So what if she wasn’t an idea person, she still knew what she was doing.

She bit her lip as she thought this over. “Well I suppose we should figure out the singing before the choreography. Since that’s like representative of the song and words and whatever. So do you want to express your artistic ideas?” Quinn asked, amused.

“Well, why don’t we sing through it a couple times, get the gist, and if you want, you can take the melody and I’ll work out a harmony as we go along. You know... wing it,” she said smugly. Yeah, that’s right, she could harmonize on the fly. She was a tried and true alto after all, and that’s what they did best.

Tina looked sort of smug and Quinn couldn’t decide whether that annoyed her or amused her. She was leaning more on the annoyed side. “Yeah, fine, whatever. We can just sing along with the video for now,” she said as she focused back on her computer to get it queued up.

It didn’t take very long for either one of them to get off track. About fifteen minutes into their session, they were already arguing. The first two run-throughs had gone well enough. But by the time they ran through it a third time, Tina was getting a little too musically creative for Quinn’s liking.

“I’m just trying something different! You know, to keep things interesting. And not boring. Which it will be if we just play it by the book,” Tina argued. “Riffing is a totally legitimate form of musical expression.”

“Yeah, well you’re not Mariah Carey. And your little musical expression sounds terrible. I’d rather sound boring than horrible,” Quinn shot back.

Tina’s mouth fell open indignantly. “It sounded bad because you weren’t willing to work with me. Maybe if you would try to sync up with me more, we’d sound better. But I guess you just have boring down to a science.”

“Excuse me? You’re going to call me boring? Like seriously? Do you know who you’re talking to?” Quinn scoffed. Her, boring? Said the girl who thought the idea of a good time was drag racing wheel chairs. Yeah, she knew about that. One of the girls on the Cheerios had stayed late at school for tutoring and saw her and Artie rolling by on her way out.

Tina glared at her. If she’d had the guts to do it, she would have said, ”The most interesting thing you ever did was get knocked up by your boyfriend’s best friend.” But she didn’t quite have the guts. Instead she just crossed her arms and kept her glare trained on Quinn. “Yeah. I am. And I do. You live to conform. That’s why you wear that stupid uniform of yours to school every single day,” she said, and then as an afterthought, “even when it’s freezing out.” Because honestly...

“Oh so I’m boring because I wear a uniform and not freaky vampire clothes like you? You just don’t understand what it’s like to be on an actual team where you feel like you belong. Even in Glee we don’t all click together. I mean, clearly since we can’t stand each other. So whatever, make fun of my Cheerios uniform. But at least I look hot in it,” she snarled back.

“That’s not even... you missed my point,” she said, trying not to look hurt or upset by what Quinn had said. But there wasn’t really any anger in her voice anymore. “But fine, if you really feel like you belong there. They seem like such a supportive bunch,” she said, sarcastically. “But you’re wrong, I do know what it feels like to belong somewhere, because even though not everyone in Glee gets along all the time, I still know that the majority of the people in there have my back. That’s good enough for me.”

“Oh please. Don’t pretend like you know me. And I never said I wouldn’t have your back. Don’t you ever wonder why the kids in Glee aren’t getting slushied this year? I’m not some monster, Chang.” They definitely weren’t fighting about their song anymore and Quinn couldn’t really figure out how they got to be talking about this, but she felt the need to defend herself. Even if she and Tina weren’t pals or whatever it wasn’t like she was going around putting slushie hits on her or filling her locker with shaving cream.

“Yeah, well... we’ll see how long that lasts,” she muttered. Tina thought it was possible that she was being cynical, but she couldn’t help but be skeptical. It wasn’t that long ago when she had been getting slushie facials on a weekly basis or coming to school to find her locker decorated with garlic and rosaries. “Can we just get back to work?”

Quinn let out a frustrated sigh. “Yeah, whatever.” Sure, the one time she attempted to be sincere and prove her loyalty to Glee Tina totally didn’t believe her.

The rest of their practice went smoothly, or at least as smoothly as was possible for them. It didn’t take log for them to work out a harmony and Tina kept the riffing to herself. Tina left about an hour later after they both agreed to meet at her house the next day. She said a polite goodbye to Quinn’s mom before making her way back home, feeling like not very much had been accomplished at all.
