Chapter Four

Quinn didn’t know why she had agreed to this. That harlot woman was going to be staring her down from all over Tina’s walls and it would be awkward if she had to see all of Tina’s family again because she didn’t remember a single one of their names.

When it was time to meet she drove over to Tina’s, parked, then hurried to the front door and knocked hard. It was still super cold out and she hoped she wasn’t left out here forever.

It wasn’t too long before, not Tina, but Tina’s mother opened the door for Quinn. “Oh, hello,” Sarah said cheerfully. “Quinn, right? From Glee club? Come in, come in, it’s freezing,” she said, holding open the door and gesturing for Quinn to enter. “Nice to see you again. Tina’s upstairs, in her room. You can go straight up,” she said, smiling politely.

“Thanks Mrs. Cohen-Chang,” Quinn said smiling back, hoping to God that was the right title to address her as, before escaping up the stairs. She was also hoping to God that Tina took down those offensive and vulgar posters but wasn’t holding her breath.

She knocked a few times before pushing the door open and walked inside. “Uh, hey. Your mom just told me to come up so... yeah. Hi.” Why did she always get hit with the awkward stick when she walked in this room.

Tina had her eyes glued to the television when she heard a knock at her door. Before she could even say, “come in” Quinn entered. She sat up a little more but still resting against her headboard. She’d agreed for them to meet at this time, but she’d gotten distracted by the impromptu Buffy the Vampire Slayer mini marathon she decided to have. “Hey,” she said cooly. She figured she should put the show on pause or turn it off completely, but... “I’m just watching Buffy. I got distracted.”

Quinn glanced at the television then back at Tina but stayed by the door, leaning against it awkwardly. “Oh. Well... Cool.” She had never watched the show before but apparently Tina really was into vampires because the lady on the screen had a stake or something. What was this even? And what was that tone in Tina’s voice? It was cold enough outside she didn’t need this in here too.

Realizing that she was being rude, and it wasn’t like it was Quinn’s fault she had interrupted, she reached for the remote and pressed pause. “Have you ever seen it?” she asked, her voice considerably more friendly.

Quinn glanced at the paused screen then shook her head. “No...” she said hesitantly, though was glad Tina sounded nicer this time.

Tina smiled, internally deciding to initiate her. “Come on, this episode just started. Watch it with me and then we’ll get to work... please,” she added, smiling sweetly.

Now Quinn was a little freaked out. Tina was acting far too nice and wanted her to watch this show with her when they should be working on their stupid Glee assignment. Except she really didn’t want to start fighting with Tina again after they had their little blowout yesterday so just nodded and took a few more steps into the room and sat on the desk chair. “Fine, just one episode though.”

Tina mentally congratulated herself and was about to scoot over to give Quinn room on the bed, but she’d gone for the desk chair instead. Shrugging, she turned back to the TV and pressed play. The cold open wasn’t even over yet. “I can’t believe you’ve never even seen one episode. It’s classic.”

“Isn’t this show kind of old? I mean, look at the clothes they’re wearing,” she said, examining the horrible fashion on the screen.

Tina shrugged. She didn’t really watch it for the clothes. “Well, when it was airing those outfits were really popular. But that’s beside the point. It’s pretty old, yeah, but it’s pretty good too.” It was really good, but Tina didn’t want to gush. She settled back into a more comfortable position as the opening credits ended and within moments was sucked right back in.

Quinn just rolled her eyes. She couldn’t imagine how those close could have ever been popular. But Tina was back to ignoring her so she focused on the TV too, figuring she might as well watch it if it was on. Things moved pretty slowly but when it came to a scene with a bunch of girls seated in a circle she tilted her head. “Did they just say Wicca? That’s like... the devil’s religion.”

Tina rolled her eyes but didn’t look away from the screen. “It’s just a pagan religion. They don’t worship satan or anything like that. They just really dig nature,” she explained quickly. She wondered if Quinn would be offended by a lot of the things in this show. Witchcraft, demons... premarital sex. It was wall-to-wall blasphemy in a 45 minute program. But the episode they were watching wasn’t actually about vampires at all.

Honestly, who liked nature? There were bugs and it was cold and there were wild animals... Seriously. “Whatever,” she mumbled as she continued watching. And embarrassingly enough she was kind of getting into it. “Wait, did that box thing just steal everyone’s voice? I thought this was supposed to be about vampires.”

Tina felt herself smile at Quinn’s question, hearing the genuine interest in her voice. “Yes, it did. And not all Buffy episodes are about vampires. But if you’re disappointed, that guy with the platinum blonde hair, he’s a vamp,” she said, her voice like goo. She couldn’t help it. He was gorgeous.

Quinn tore her eyes away from the TV long enough to look at Tina and raise her eyebrow at her. What was it with girls and vampires? Turning back to the show, she focused again, trying to understand what was going on. And apparently was concentrating so hard that she visibly jumped when the freaky demon guy first came on the screen. “What the hell!”

Tina jumped as well, but only because Quinn had been the one to startle her. That’s what I want to know, she thought before realizing that Quinn had been scared by the show. Well that was amusing. Tina hadn’t actually been scared by it in a long time. “It’s a horror show. So, you know, sometimes scary,” she said, gently.

“Well you could have warned me,” Quinn said, slightly snappish. “I don’t really like scary thing...” she said, though was too stubborn to want to stop watching. She was Quinn Fabray. She could do anything. She wasn’t going to let a stupid TV show scare her. Instead she brought her knees up and hugged them to her chest, as if that would protect her.

That’s cute. Tina thought. It took her a second to realize she was applying that word to Quinn Fabray of all people, but it was... pretty cute. She turned back to the TV and shrugged. “Sorry. Well, I’m warning you now.” Though she supposed it was a little late for that. But it gave her an idea. “You can sit up here if you want,” she said, scooting over a little so she was closer to the wall. “If you don’t want to be, uh, alone.” Though it’s not like she was very far.

“Uh, yeah, fine whatever,” Quinn said and moved over to the bed quickly. She could at least hide under a blanket if it got to scary. Except she really couldn’t because Tina would tell everyone and then her reputation would be ruined. Whatever. She was still too stubborn not to finish the episode.

Once settled in on the bed beside Tina she focused back on the TV and again jumped when the tall, freaky, floating demons came on the screen. And there were these things with really floppy arms. “What the fuck are they supposed to be?”

“They’re just... demons. They don’t really have a name. They just hold down the victims so it’s easier for The Gentlemen to steal their hearts,” Tina explained.

“Steal their hearts? Like... literally? Or is this supposed to be some ironic show about love or something? Because that is kind of horrific too,” Quinn said, still watching the TV curiously.

Tina smiled but didn’t answer. Quinn was about to find out in a minute anyway as the poor schmuck opening his door when he was all alone and without a voice was about to find out as well.

Just the way they moved and had that creepy grin made Quinn shudder. They were so creepy. Her eyes widened when they knocked on the door. “Oh my God, you idiot! Don’t open the door!” She said to the TV. “Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. They’re actually taking his heart. What he hell!”

Tina tried so hard not to laugh but her shoulders started to shake with the effort. “So to answer your question, yeah, literally,” she finally managed to get out. She turned to look at Quinn as the scene ended. “You okay?” She really hoped Quinn wouldn’t run away again.

Quinn was stubbornly determined to make it through this so she just gave a nod as she kept her eyes focused on the show. Thankfully who ever came up with this stupid demonic plot added in some comic relief and she giggled as everyone tried expressing themselves without words. Wasn’t like so much of communication supposed to be dependent on nonverbal things? It was interesting to see if that was actually true and if they could talk without really talking.

Tina was glad to see that Quinn seemed to really be enjoying the show. Or at the very least, this episode. “I like that he plays music for dramatic effect,” Tina said, laughing.

Quinn nodded again. “Well the story has to be told somehow. Like... they can’t talk,” she said before focusing again. And apparently the comedy was over because now there were shadows in the creepy white building and--

“Oh my God! Why is she walking around at night alone?” And then the blonde girl walking around fell! She needed to get up. “OH MY GOD!” Quinn subconsciously reached out and grabbed Tina’s arm. “Oh my God, the creepy things are right there. RUN!”

This time Tina just started cracking up, but Quinn had a point. She always thought the same thing when people just randomly fell and there were evil things about. Worst time ever to get clumsy. She was only mildly aware of Quinn’s hand on her wrist until she happened to glance down and see it there. Her laugh quickly died on her lips and she looked back up at Quinn, who was still intensely concentrated on the show. This wasn’t awkward at all... And it was like things were going in slow motion all of a sudden when she turned back to the television. She knew what scene was coming up.

Quinn didn’t notice that she was holding onto Tina either because she was still yelling at the TV. “Oh my God. What if the creepy things get her? Even though she’s like a devil worshiper... okay nature worshiper whatever, she doesn’t deserve to have her heart cut out! Run!!” Quinn babbled as she started intensely at the TV.

Tina said nothing, she was barely watching the show anymore, her focus almost entirely on Quinn’s hand, still gripping her wrist. She wasn’t hurting her, and Quinn didn’t even seem to realize what she was doing. It was as amusing as it was weird.

If she hadn’t been so focused on the chase that was going on (which that red headed girl was now a part of) she would have found it odd that Tina wasn’t reacting at all. “Oh my God! They’re trapped. It’s like a dead end and they’re way too weak to move that pop machine...” Quinn said, fidgeting nervously. They weren’t really going to die were they?

Tina was now also fidgeting nervously, but for a different reason. She could just bring it to Quinn’s attention, but if Quinn was spooked, that wouldn’t be very nice. She turned back to the show in time to see the two girls on screen join hands as they attempted to move said pop machine in order to block the door. Normally, she thought this scene was sweet and adorably romantic, but now it just made her feel itchy and nervous.

Quinn could sort of feel Tina fidgeting too and she looked over at her curiously. She didn’t look scared really. Quinn couldn’t really tell what the other girl was feeling. She didn’t want to stare at her though because that was rude so she turned back in time to see the two girls hold hands. And seeing that made her painfully aware that she was holding into Tina. She quickly pulled her hand back. “Oh. Um... sorry. I guess I got a little caught up in things.”

She gave Quinn and reassuring smile. “Oh, that’s okay,” Tina said, trying to sound normal and not at all nervous and awkward. “I’m glad you’re enjoying it.” But it wasn’t over yet, and now that she was no longer distracted, Tina was able to once again really watch the rest of the episode.

Quinn nodded at Tina then crossed her arms to make sure she didn’t accidentally grab the other girl again. Now that Quinn wasn’t holding onto her, Tina seemed to be able to stop fidgeting and get into the show again. The only logical thing in Quinn’s mind was that she was distracting her and she wasn’t going to make that mistake again. “Yeah well it’s kind of intense.”

“Yeah, it can be,” Tina chuckled. When the episode ended, Tina turned to Quinn, all past awkwardness nearly forgotten and asked her, “so, you liked it then?” She wasn’t surprised. It was an awesome show, and Quinn wasn’t the first person she’d introduced to it.

“Yeah well, it was alright,” Quinn said nonchalantly. “A lot scarier than I expected. But whatever. I wasn’t really that scared. Like I said, it was just intense and I got like, caught up in the moment and stuff.”

Tina nodded and smiled, nonplussed by Quinn’s lukewarm response. She quickly glanced over at the clock in her room and then back at the TV. “So... wanna watch another one,” she asked. She didn’t wait for an answer before she climbed over Quinn and walked over to the DVD player. “We still have plenty of time, and... just one more.” Tina wasn’t really in the mood to work and she was surprised that they could just hang out like this and actually not argue, well, not about anything serious. She beamed at Quinn from where she was standing, hoping to distract her into saying yes with her enthusiasm.

Quinn’s eyes widened when Tina climbed over her. One moment she was really close and the next she wasn’t. A little distracted by that (what the hell was this?!) Quinn just nodded her head. She could have been selling her soul over to the devil for all she knew. Blinking hard a few times she focused. “Wait, it’s not going to be as scary is it?”

Satisfied, Tina turned back to look at the full series box set she had on the player. “I’ll look for a less scary episode,” she said, thinking she might even change seasons. Deciding on one of her favorite episodes from season 3, she put in the disk and walked back over to the bed. Once again, climbing over Quinn to get back to her spot. She felt more than saw her hair brush across Quinn’s face. “Uh, sorry,” she said, laughing nervously and blushing a little before pulling the stray strands behind her ear and settling back. “Oh, and this one actually has vampires in it.”

“Your hair smells nice.” Shit. Had she just said that out loud? Well that wasn’t weird or anything. Clearing her throat slightly, Quinn turned her focus on the TV as if nothing had just happened. “Oh goodie, vampires,” she said, slightly sarcastic while also smirking.

“Thanks...” Tina said, genuinely flattered by what she assumed was a compliment and not just random rambling. She began the episode and turned back to Quinn, returning the smirk. “Yeah, but these vampires are pretty badass... and they don’t sparkle.” Something she considered a major plus. Turning back to the show, she smiled to herself. Even though they weren’t getting anything done or even being remotely productive, to Tina, it finally felt like they were getting somewhere.
