Sometimes just saying 'Hi, it's a beautiful evening, isn't it?' or 'How old is your boy?' can redirect the energy. It's non-confrontational but puts a change in what's happening.
I often wish I'd had the courage in the past.

That's not a bad idea. I ought to incorporate some of these 'diversions' for various scenarios in my bag of tricks, just in case.
