“You fall from the sky with several flowers”.
- Reginald Shepherd (You, Therefore)
Even though it was all hugs and kisses -
“Want to sit in my lap?” Junno asked, watching Tatsuya tipping off his seat to watch the drama performance in the school gym.
Tatsuya was really short.
Perhaps, just tall enough to reach Junno's chest.
At first, Tatsuya hesitated and then, “fine with me but, I don’t want to hear any complaints after the fact”.
“What’s there to complain about?” Junno teased with a smile while he adjusted his legs.
Not very long after though, Junno casually says, “You’re heavy”.
“Don’t make me hurt you. I warned you, didn’t I?”
Junno laughed and in the darkness of the gym he wrapped his long arms around Tatsuya and whispers low and ticklish in his ear, “but I don’t mind. You feel so damn good”.
It was that kind of love. The love you realise only after you’ve lost it.
But one day, for the farce sake of normalcy they both called quits on their budding affection. Junno didn’t explicitly say why but it was clear what was eating away at his mind.
Boys love girls and that’s the way of the universe.
They were kissing. That haunting dream Tatsuya always has was once reality - when betwixt the moaning and touching, Junno suddenly said, “I don’t think we should be doing this”.
At the time, too immersed in sensations that could send him climbing walls, Tatsuya hadn’t suspected a thing and replied, “stop thinking. Thinking is bad”, and proceeded to latch his lips onto Junno’s neck damping his skin.
“No”, Junno had answered, “I really don’t think we should be doing this”.
Tatsuya gave up, thinking Junno being shy in those situations to be the cutest thing but---
But then thinking back, it finally all makes sense.
In the first place, it’s strange how they ended up knowing each other.
Apart from Tatsuya watching Junno ever bouncy with energy in class, the two really had nothing in common. Junno and Nakamaru knew each other from being in the agriculture club, but it wasn’t until the three met in the music room practicing the musical and dance routine for their cultural festival - that the three actually became friends.
“Want to leave together?”, Junno asked one day after practice when only the two of them were left in the room packing up their belongings. Normally, he and Nakamaru would go home together, but lately, Nakamaru had other club business to attend.
“Sure”.
That’s when it all truly started.
Then it happened again.
“Tatsuya, ready to go?”
“Yep! Let’s go”.
They hardly said anything much to each other and yet, they sought each out like one of those necessary daily routines and come next day, “Tatsuya, go ahead”, Junno shouted across the room to him, “I’ve my class interview today, so I’ll catch the next bus”.
Tatsuya checked the time and before long replied, “I’ll wait”.
Tatsuya wasn’t so sure what had happened to him but the smile Junno gave him back then was like an imprint that would last an eternity. Such fairness and light and calm sent a sudden instinct of him wanting to always hang out with Junno.
He happily waited a whole forty-five minutes, and enjoyed the scenery of Junno rushing to meet him.
“I’m done. Sorry to have kept you waiting”.
“Don’t be”, closing the book he was reading, “I managed to complete one assignment”.
Junno’s face changed into something that’s like the start of a brilliant smile, “thanks for waiting again”.
Nodding, they exited the school grounds, passed the loud shouts coming from the gymnasium and the guys on the baseball field, and as wordless as ever, they boarded the bus.
“See you tomorrow”, Tatsuya said when he reached his stop.
Junno chuckled with, “tomorrow is Saturday”.
Laughing at himself and without thinking Tatsuya asked, “what’s your stance on ramen?”
Junno tilted his head sideways, a bit confused at the change and choice in topic but answered, “I’m pro-ramen”.
“See that ramen shop?”, Tatsuya pointed, “my parents run it. I’ll be helping out tomorrow”.
It took Junno a while to get the drift but when he finally caught on he followed up with, “I’ll feel for ramen at about 4:00 o’clock tomorrow”.
Tatsuya smiled with utter satisfaction, “then again, see you tomorrow”.
Ramen Saturdays, became a regular fling. Even Nakamaru had joined in.
And in the second place;
Their relationship was eccentric - the one where they started off being more than friends.
It was lunchtime and Tatsuya’s food seemed to disappear the moment his hands moved towards his mouth.
“You really like eating, don’t you?”, Junno asked with a smile and amazement in his eyes.
“I guess so...” Tatsuya shamelessly admitted, dumping another spoonful of rice into his mouth, “but I like you more”.
Junno chuckled with, “what can I say, being loveable is my special skill”. But when he glanced over, Tatsuya was serious as a judge and only chewing and looking at him, “you’re joking, right?” Junno asked, franked with surprise.
“I’m surprised too. You’re a man, after all”, Tatsuya coolly replied like the most ordinary thing, “but, it is what it is”.
Putting his lunch aside, Junno asked, “what do you like about me?”
“I feel like I can bully you and get away with it”.
Junno chortled and wrapped the rest of lunch away, “that doesn’t make me look good”.
“From where I’m standing----. It just means I’m comfortable around you”.
Junno was too lost in the suddenness to reply but that didn’t stop Tatsuya from declaring how serious he was when he asked, “so what do you say? Want to give it a try?”
It became their naughty little secret, until Nakamaru found them kissing behind a tree in the school’s park.
Few weeks in, “where should we go?”
“France…”, Tatsuya dreamily answered, “The Eiffel Tower”.
Junno chuckled and pulled Tatsuya over for a quick kiss, “I think we need to be more than two broke pocket high school students to pay for a date like that”.
“Then let’s go and when we’re working and rich”.
“That’s a lot of years from now”.
"We've all the time".
In the end, their first date was to Tokyo Tower one evening in mid-autumn.
On the walk from the subway to the observatory at sundown, the wind blew chilly. Junno clasped Tatsuya’s hand in a cosy embrace as they avoided the scandalous streetlamps with their watchful lights. They kept their love in the shadows walking for minutes without saying a word, and yet they felt as if they understood each other through the feathery touch of their fingertips.
The view of Tokyo from the tower was a wonder that night. Sparks and glitter and the two teenage boys frolic in the bliss of the autumn sky.
“Was it always this pretty?” Junno murmured in the crook of Tatsuya’s neck. They had tucked themselves away in a corner from the crowd of tourists and other lovers.
Tatsuya relaxed his head into Junno’s neck bone, “I don’t remember it being so”.
That's because, everything suddenly becomes pretty to people in love.
A whole year and a half of a pretty world enveloped them. They were so busy with each other - with foot massages, ear wax cleaning, lollipop dates, playing games and having sleepovers - they were so busy that when it happened, it was sudden and devastating and secretly they wept.
Junno’s family would change jobs and move.
“Will you break up?” Nakamaru asked Tatsuya as they walked home after school.
Nakamaru could tell that Tatsuya was also thinking hard about the question long before then, but still hadn’t found the answer.
“I’m sorry”, Nakamaru said.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing. That’s why I’m apologising. I can do nothing to help”.
Junno and Tatsuya had only one week left together.
And Fukuoka was a very long way from Tokyo.
When Nakamaru relates the story to Kame, Kame nods and asks, “but couldn’t Junno have stayed and lived on his own? He was almost seventeen, wasn't he? I know many people who did that”.
“Yeah”, Nakamaru sighs, “except that Junno’s parents wouldn’t let him”.
“And so that’s it?” Kame asks as if disappointed, “It ended dry and anticlimactic like that?”
“Anticlimactic… well no one kicked and screamed if that’s what you mean. Junno’s parents told him about the move only a week before”.
“Then what about letters and phone calls? Surely they could’ve at least managed that much”.
“Why are you so frustrated?” Nakamaru asks, noting Kame’s impatience, “the letters stopped coming one day”.
Offing the lamp and pulling the blankets back on them both, Kame grumbles, “I feel like I’m listening to a tragic tale”.
“Well it is tragic”, Nakamaru answers, hugging him, “but Tatsuya did well living without the man he loves”, and folding Kame tighter into him, “I can’t imagine that. Can't imagine me without you”.
Kame surprised himself at the misery he feels just hearing that story. He and Tatsuya might always bicker with each other but that’s just how well they get along. Therefore, he can’t help but feel sadness in his chest. He inhales deeply and exhales grumbling, “cowards”.
“Well I did say teenage boys are cowards”.
“But it didn’t end there, did it? From my last chat with Tatsuya, I could tell he still has feelings for this Junno dude”.
“Hmm, I don’t know”, Nakamaru muses, “the universe is cruel. It’s like on one hand, it’s telling them they’re made for each other, but on the other, it’s sending a message to them saying, ‘no way’. I’ll make your life a living hell”.
“They’re not together so what more hell could they possible be in?”
“Three years ago, after working and finally managed to save enough money, Tatsuya hired a private detective to search for Junno’s whereabouts since about seven years had passed since the last time they spoke. Anyway, it was too late”.
“You mean about the wife you told me about the other night?”
“Yeah”, Nakamaru helplessly answers, remembering the grim look on his best friend’s face that day, “when Tatsuya was telling me about it, he was so calm that it actually scared me. To be honest, it’s his silence that worries me the most now. That guy - he’s stoic and collected but he’s really just a good actor. He’ll probably - no he’ll definitely crumble seeing Junno again".
"... or maybe he'll just easily forgive him”.
In all the years Kame has known Tatsuya, he has thought him to be many things but pitiful. But now, a whole past is revealed to him and all the little odd things about Tatsuya are now adding up, and it pains Kame to admit it, that some man he has never met - still - after so many years, has the power to shake up the strong opponent he knows Tatsuya to be. And so, Kame can’t help but hate this Junno character a bit.
A whole lot, maybe.
But it is what it is.
And on Saturday night when Tatsuya flounders his way from the stage, throwing his head back in hearty laughter from the pleasant and lively catcalls out to him - his brunette curls bounce prettily on his head as he skips across the room in his merry heels.
But then he blinks at glimpsing a smile from his past.
And then he gasps.
And Tatsuya's laughter soon dies a slow death - as Junno’s eyes made four with his.
