The next day, Tatsuya woke up well rested and happy like chirping birds soaring in the blue sky. He made pancakes the way Nakamaru taught him - it’s the only thing Nakamaru can make since Kame insists on doing the cooking - and down Tatsuya sits for a breakfast of pancakes, orange maple syrup and mixed berries on his plate. It's an absolutely beautiful day with the smell of honey ginger tea looming in the air.
No way, did yesterday ever happen.
And Tatsuya is a good actor at making it just so.
And who can blame him?
Weeks passed without him ever seeing the blinkies again.
But dams and rivers never just suddenly burst their banks, nor does the rain fall in a single moment of downpour.
Tatsuya had a dream.
And in this dream, Junno was kissing him while one hand fondled about in his pants. Deep down, Tatsuya knew he was in sleep, but a dream had never felt that real. The lavender scent of Junno’s neck mixed with the hint of sweat behind his ears. The weight of Junno on top of him. The delicate yet possessive way Junno touched him. The taste of Junno’s tongue sliding over Tatsuya’s lips. Tatsuya was always so full from being together with Junno that it scared him.
It scared them both.
But secretly, it scared one more than it did the other.
It had been a long while since he’d had that dream.
So many times they’ve touched and kissed each other but had never gone all the way. Back then, Tatsuya thought their innocence was because Junno was also embarrassed and shy like any other couple’s first time. But how very wrong was he, and how his heart ached when he found out this. In all their splendor of their love underneath the sun, Tatsuya thought that he and Junno wanted the same thing and shared the same feelings, but;
But, boys love girls and that’s how the world was.
Still, Tatsuya still dreamt of a day of happy ending when---
“You look like shit”, Kame is swift to attack him the moment he walks through the bar door, lost in thoughts.
“Thanks. Pity you can’t be as fabulous”, Tatsuya backfires, smirking.
But Kame doesn’t bat an eyelash replying with, “and your eyes are red like a baboon’s ass”.
“One day I’ll really wipe clean that pretty face of yours”.
“Thanks for the compliment but how dare you threaten to damage your best friend’s property?”
Tatsuya narrows his eyes and frowns, “with that twisted personality of yours, you’re already damaged goods”.
“You really aren’t cute”, Kame hisses in a plotting gesture, “with such violent intent, you’ll never get a man”.
“Says the guy who threatens to dispose of my dick... and I don’t need a man”.
It's sudden but perfect timing so Kame asks, “and why’s that? It’s not like I haven’t seen you with a few before”.
“Well fuck buddies are fuck buddies. That works perfectly fine”.
“And why’s that?”
“What do you mean by why’s that? We screw, feel good and be on our way. No complications. Or have you forgotten feel good days when you were loose?”.
“So you’ve never had a boyfriend?” Kame rephrases, dodging the remark about his past.
Tatsuya isn’t surprised at the question, Kame notes. Rather, it's just as Nakamaru had said - apprehensive. Tatsuya becomes on guard.
“I’ve had many boyfriends”.
But Kame is evil with persistence, “anyone special? Like a first love?”
Tatsuya eyes Kame like he suddenly has him all figured out. A windstorm is starting to brew inside him and that night that happened weeks before, the night Tatsuya has been wishing hard to erase, has him caught in the tailwind and is being hurled right back at him and with a painful stutter, he shouts, “mind your own business”, and hurries away.
Kame doesn’t understand why. Why must Tatsuya suffer when he can just track down Junno and if their love is as magnificently strong as they made it out to be, then nothing but a happily-ever-after would be gifted with a ribbon and bow.
Being in love himself, Kame knows that it’s not an easy feat. Nakamaru is eccentric, grumpy, flumpy, grouchy and nowhere near daring, he’s stubborn, worrisome and plain - he’s Kame’s complete opposite. But there’s a connection they share. One so strong to make a proud man like Kame kneel and roll fat in love with him. After so many trials and errors in his past relationships, there’s nothing Kame wouldn’t do to stay in his happy bubble with Nakamaru.
That night when he sees Nakamaru at home he mutters a bit pained that, “love shouldn’t be that hard”, as if in pity as he sought comfort in Nakamaru’s lap.
Love isn’t that hard - he keeps thinking - at least not the way Tatsuya and Nakamaru makes it out to be.
But oh Kame, if only you knew. If only you could understand the sly stunt fate pulled three years ago.
“Are you going to tell him?” Kame asks Nakamaru as they move to wash the dishes together, "that you heard that Junno is back in town?".
“Have you ever seen Tatsuya run?”
“You think he’s that much of a coward?”
“He’s just scared”.
“What if we threaten to cut his dick off again? It’s not like he’ll need it if he and Junno should get back together”.
Nakamaru chuckles, “I almost took you serious there”.
“I was serious”.
Nakamaru must’ve picked up on Kame’s inability to fully comprehend the matter as he watches him mindlessly rinse the cutleries while looking through the window out somewhere, and so says, “it may seem uncalled for to you but if you knew them back then, then you would understand. They were natural yet awkward together. They made up as soon as they quarreled. They kissed when neither expected it. Tatsuya has always been spoiled and Junno spoiled him even more. On Valentine’s Day, they would exchange with each other the chocolates they got from girls and---”.
“Blah blah”, Kame sighs in impatience, “if they loved each other so much then they should have fought for it”.
Nakamaru feels a bit helpless but adds, “maybe they did, but one man alone can't fight a battle”.
Kame looks at him with frank curiousity and asks, “are you saying Tatsuya is hung up on a one-sided love?”
“Well… considering what happened three years ago, he just might be”.
Three years ago.
“Will you meet with him?” Nakamaru asked
“No. It wouldn’t change a thing”.
“Then, what will you do?”
Tatsuya exhaled heavily then answered with a dry smile, “Simple. I’ll pay the private detective to close the case and move on with my life”.
“But you’ve finally found him. At least meet and talk and maybe things will sort themselves out eventually”.
“It’s too late Nakamaru”, Tatsuya replied tiredly, sighing as if fed up, “things will never go the way I want them to. Junno will never be mine”.
Once upon a time, Tatsuya used to dream...
“Tatchan, what exactly did that report say?”
Wordlessly, he threw the file to Nakamaru whose eyes widened in shock and then narrowed into pity, and after a few seconds, he helplessly remarked, “he really did it, didn’t he? That heartless Idiot”.
...but those dreams ended, and all that’s left are his nightmares.
And the khaki folder on the table was the wicked messenger.
“I thought I had him, Nakamaru. I thought finally, my love - all these feelings will have a place to rest. But---”.
Junno was already married and---
After all the years of Tatsuya waiting, maturing and searching for when he thought the time was right, fate wouldn’t let him have such an easy happy ending.
