“Your eyes on me were as eyes that rove”.
- Thomas Hardy (Neutral Tones)
His attention is drawn to the person in the black and red checkered lolita dress, and who's playing strings on the piano. When the face comes into full view, a rush of nostalgia comes flooding him. The hair is long but the eyes are full and sharp and the cheekbones are high and lean, masculine yet gentle and sexy with the way the lips move full and amazing in piquantness, and how his tongue wets around them. When the song fills the club, the familiar voice dabbles and tickles his ears. In that moment, Junno knew this is exactly what he wants - he wants the man in the lolita dress.

“Tatsuya, you’re Tatsuya, right?” Junno plays the fool, asking.

Tatsuya is a good actor.

As if unconsciously prepared for this day, Tatsuya had taken up boxing and worked hard at the gym, making it that not only did he get some good looking muscles, but also, he had mastered how to pull a poker face and fake the pain.

He didn’t break apart at the sight of Junno watching him.  “I feel lucky”, he says, pulling at the hem of his dress, suddenly becoming self-conscious as he inwardly cowers with fear.

“Yeah, me too”, Junno replies, and his eyes haven’t falter from the way they roam over Tatsuya, “were you always here? I stopped by recently but---”.

“Do you always frequent these types of places?” Tatsuya cuts him off shortly.

Junno laughs, that easy gesture of his face that can warm the coldest of places, “you’re right. It’s all new to me but somehow, I feel comfortable here. But what a surprise seeing you here”.

Tatsuya squeezes a pale smile, “you’ll be even more surprised when you see the owner”.

Junno raises his eyebrows with keen interest and, “anyone I know?”

“Like the back of your hand”, Tatsuya replies, and he even manages to pull out a full smile as he waves his hand to signal Nakamaru.

Junno is genuinely surprised. His eyes widen and his face sprawls with a grin. Nakamaru, himself, waddles over in disbelief, grinning.

But all the while, Nakamaru’s arrival is Tatsuya’s distress call to save him.

He can’t allow Junno to see how fickle he is.

Kame, who has been keeping watch since the beginning could imagine the real scene. Behind the niceties, pleasant smiles and old chats, Kame could see Tatsuya shrinking and about to lose oxygen. So he walks over and calls, “Tatsuya, go get changed, already. Unless you want to pay for dry cleaning”.

It’s only then Nakamaru takes notice of how carried way he was and how painful it must have been for Tatsuya. He feels ashamed and wants to lash himself. But it’s been so long since he’d seen his friend that---

“Have you always been gay?” Junno asks after contemplatively watching Tatsuya walk away.

“I guess so. But I only found out during university. I have a senior to thank for that”.

Junno laughs and teases, “you wild beast”, and then an awkward stretch of silence looms in the air, that’s when Nakamaru knew what’s coming, “how is he doing?”

Nakamaru turns his attention to Tatsuya who had taken his place beside Kame at the bar, “well you’ve seen him. He’s as pretty as how you left him”.

Junno smiles though with grimace, “the truth is”, he says, “tonight isn’t a coincidence. I’ve known for a while now that Tatsuya works here - well I didn’t know you were the owner but - I knew he was here. I had him searched for”.

Nakamaru can’t deny a night full of surprises. “So are you saying that---”.

“Yeah, I came back for him”, Junno admits worriedly but convicted, “but, it won’t be easy, will it?”

Nakamaru is caught between happiness and a boiling pot of melancholy, and when he doesn’t say anything, Junno continues, “I never knew what I had until I lost it. And even then, I was too ashamed and still a coward to right it. I’m so despicable that I even went ahead and got married knowing my heart wasn’t into it - trying to forget everything”.

“You mean, trying to forget him”, Nakamaru finishes with a disapproving glare, “so what will you do now?”

A longness passed and Nakamaru wonders if Junno even heard his question, but then---

“Hey, Yuichi”, Junno contemplatively calls him, “how should I beg? How can I get him back? I don’t deserve his forgiveness, but do you think he’ll love me again?”

But Nakamaru knows it’s the other way around. Once again, Junno has it all wrong.

Tatsuya has always loved him. So in fact, it’s the forgiveness part that’s the most troubling. Nakamaru wonders what Tatsuya would do.  If Tatsuya is weak enough to still cling to a useless love for years, then perhaps, he’s strong enough to once more claim it in a second chance.

“It’s Tatsuya you should be asking”, he replies at last.

After all, what Junno and Tatsuya share isn’t a failed love, nor is it an impossible relationship. They just failed at the first go at making it real and lasting.

Near the middle of the night, Junno finally braves his way to Tatsuya’s side and, “so, when you’re not playing girl, what do you do?”

“Play boy, what else?”, Tatsuya replies dryly smirking.

“Well isn’t that productive?” Junno laughs, “You’re like the best of both worlds”.

“Are you judging me?” Tatsuya takes him on, “I thought girls were your flavour”.

Junno hums a thinking sound, “I can’t say they ever were my favourite taste”.

Tatsuya purposely looks at Junno's ring finger, quirks his eyebrow and just as he’s about to comment Junno asks, "Tatsuya, if I weren’t married, would you give me another chance?”

Tatsuya can’t ignore the sharp and heavy thump of his heart, and in the instant, he almost shouts yes. But looking at Junno’s finger he replies, “but you're married”.

“I know. But I said if I weren’t”.

“Don’t waste my time, Junno. You are married. There’s no if”.

“Were you always this stubborn?”

“Were you always this pain in the ass?”

“Maybe I was”.

Tatsuya sighs in exhaustion, the only real emotions he has shown since Junno’s return, “Junno, what do you want from me?”

“It’s not what I want from you. It’s that I want you”.

“Are you drunk?”

“Serves me right, ah?” Junno says, “after what I did, I deserve all this”.

At first, Junno figures he could hide about the bush and gradually feel himself around Tatsuya. But he has already starved himself for seven years and now, the sudden sight of Tatsuya urgently reminds him just how hungry he is for the man.

But Tatsuya won’t forgive him. That much he’s sure about. But if Tatsuya could still love him, then forgiveness can come later. He’ll live to make up for the lost time.

And as the club lights dim, fades, relights itself and changes shape around them, Junno can’t help himself and wonders, ‘how can Tatsuya be this pretty?’. Tatsuya’s lips are plummy and ripe with an enchantment to be kissed.

The pendant of the necklace drapes around his neck and hangs down the hidden crevice of his padded bosom.

Without being aware of it, Junno whispers earnestly, “Tatsuya, I love you”.

“Oh, so you’ve finally noticed”, Tatsuya replies with a wry grin.

“You knew?” Junno dumbly asks.

“Always did. At least I’d hoped so”.

Exactly. Tatsuya always hopes that Junno is still in love with him. That’s why he waited all these years until that day three years ago.

“So you’ll take me back?”

Hesitantly, Tatsuya’s lips move to say something, his hands fidgeting on the bar counter. He makes a few attempts and in the end, “I do want to take you back and love you wicked until you can’t live without me”, he says without abandon, “but I also want to stay clear of you… I want to keep a clear distance at where you can never again hurt me”.

Junno moves across, takes hold of Tatsuya’s hands, and rubs his thumbs over Tatsuya’s knuckles in a sort of unfair soothing, “choose the first one”, he says. Begging.

Tatsuya looks up at him knowing that deep down he has already chosen to love Junno wickedly. Did he even have a choice? But even that wickedness is a sort of kindness to the very man who left him for so long.

It’s a bizarre thing. Junno is there - right there before him and yet, apart from the initial surprise, Tatsuya has grown calm and formidable in his dealing with this first and last love from his past.

Is this a good thing? He ponders. Shouldn’t he be rattled and shaking being plagued with messy thoughts by now?

Or could it be that he hasn’t quite accepted that Junno, the real thing is actually leaning against the bar counter talking to him and begging to be loved by him?

But really, it’s really something to think about, just what if Junno was free? Then what would Tatsuya do? How would life be from then? Would Junno love him half way then toss him away again or would he this time love him wholesomely… would he bear to love Tatsuya so much that the very thought of losing him hurts?

But anyhow--- he can’t say all that. He can’t open up something he can’t later close.

He’s cocooned in his thoughts watching Junno who’s as handsome as ever. The colour and shape of his lips tug a sweet note on Tatsuya’s heart. Tatsuya used to think that they broke up as his punishment for his many impure thoughts of the things he wanted Junno do to him.

Things that were more than kisses. And kisses that were more than frail touches on the lips. His entire body used to burn with a heat he had secretly hoped Junno would melt in with him. But all those dirty thoughts were soon replaced with a loneliness that would wrap, trap and hold him down for all these years.

But Junno is back.

And Junno is saying he wants him back.

And Tatsuya wants Junno too.

But their relationship can never be as simple as that.

“Your fabulousness is falling apart”, Junno teases amusedly, for apparently, Tatsuya is so far gone away in daydreaming that he doesn't realise that he's de-costuming in front of Junno by removing his eyelashes and earrings.

“Sleep with me”, Tatsuya says without blinking.

“Ah?”

“If you’ve sex with me then I’ll know”.

“Know what?”

Very frankly, Tatsuya stares at Junno’s ring finger and answers, “if you can really love me”.

After all, in their universe it’s boys love girls - and Junno even married one so---

“No…”, Junno sternly tells him, “No. I don’t think we should”.

---so it's not unexpected. Junno's reply. But---

Tatsuya bitterly smiles, picks up his belongings and, “stay away from me”.
