Ghosts caught in lights

It turns out the reason why my computer is making those noises all the time is because -- as I suspected ALL ALONG -- the fan is busted. The guy at the Apple Store offered to repair it -- which would take a week, because apparently they're just that tied up with work orders. Not happening. >:[ It looks like it's gonna have to wait until ( Read more... )

Have fun reading 20th Century Boys -- it's awesome. And interview memes are always welcome. :D

I myself went out shopping this afternoon for the first time ever on Black Friday, bought a bunch of clothes and Inio Asano's Solanin, which you might also like (or maybe it's the sort of thing only I enjoy).

I can't wait to read 20th Century Boys -- I've heard nothing but good things about it. And Solanin does look interesting too -- not the kind of thing I'd jump at, but coming-of-age stories like that do appeal to me, so I might give it a try. :-)

All right, some questions:

1) Since I don't know much about you yet: what's a typical day in the life for you?
2) What are some of your favorite books (or, alternatively, those that are most important to you)?
3) What is one thing you're most proud of?
4) What made you interested in anime/manga in the first place?
5) Where are some places you'd like to visit?

I prefer PCs because you can build your own, and you can't do that with Apples. They're more customizable that way and actually end up being cheaper precisely because you don't have to buy everything bundled together like that. As for software... well... let's just say Bill Gates doesn't get much of my money.

When you say "build your own," do you mean when you tell a company how to make your computer and what to include in it, i.e. what hardware and software you want or don't want included? If so, that makes sense, actually. Unfortunately, my parents aren't creative enough to do something like that, plus they're pretty enamored with the "shiny" of Apples. :/

Yeah, I try not to use Microsoft software as much as possible either. I have Microsoft Office on my laptop, but that's just the version the college supplied to me -- I didn't have to pay for it, and I can keep it for as long as possible. I really want to try using OpenOffice, though.

No, I meant more like, you buy the case and some other things super cheap at a local computer store, and maybe some nice stuff like a good video card at a big chain computer store or online store and just assemble your own machine. Our computer is actually getting on in years so we plan on building a new one when we finally get settled, but our machine cost about $500 back in 2004 or whenever we built it. We kept updating some of the hardware like video cards or sound cards or whatever in order to run newer applications and stuff (like we had to get a new sound card before we got Sound Forge), but eventually (like pretty soon) we need to get around to building a new one.

Antony used to build computers for people to earn cash back when he lived in Los Angeles, right after the big dot com bubble burst and he was unemployed. So I leave that kind of thing up to him, but this computer has stood up pretty well, up until late last year at least.

Huh, that's interesting; I knew people did this, but I never considered it myself. Unfortunately, neither me nor anyone I'm close to (read: my family) is tech-savvy enough to actually make their own computer, and they'll probably consider the time saved buying a computer straight up to be worth the extra cost. :/ It's awesome your computer has lasted so long, though. :D
