they may not respond to verbal speech like dogs do, but no one can tell me cats don't communicate. we just have to make more of an attempt to understand what they're saying.

I did get to teach my uncles' dog to ask for petting, mainly through faulty "gimme your paw" training (the petting reward > the paw shaking) so that she'd prod you with her paw if she wanted some snuggles, which was neat.

Honey’s “whisper” is to open her mouth slightly for about a second, then issue a tiny little “...aa.” When she doesn’t think the message quite got across, she’ll oh-so-tentatively reach out and touch my cheek. “Hey, lookit me when I’m talkin’ atcha. ...Aa.”
