Make slash not war

Hi guys,

I had quite a few questions about smexy (porny-smutty-erotica-etc) writings and what works best or what people prefer to read, write etc but after reading some sites and consulting with fellow fan-friends the list of Qs is almost done.

I would still like to know what are people's preferences when it comes to QAF fics that have sex scenes and ( Read more... )

preferences, writing is hard, writing advice

What, you don't want to hear about Brian's engorged meat hammer? XD That same person also insisted on having exact measurements for their dicks, and I didn't give a shit that Brian apparently had a 10 1/4 inch cock. As if Justin could tell just by looking at it.

A lot of these depend on the circumstances. Sometimes, when you're trying to describe them having fast, hard sex, then I think it's better not to have lots of description. But when it's supposed to be slower, or they are playing games (which, sadly, I haven't seen a whole lot lately), then I think it's best to have more description.

It's the same with the slow build--I think the decision should be based on the mood the boys are in.

I only like dirty talk as foreplay between the boys, though, and even then I don't like them using euphemisms--I think about Brian laughing in S2 when that bear in the backroom was saying, "Eat the meat, boy..." And I also think that dirty talk should be used sparingly.

ETA: Oh yeah. I can't really take any words other than cock, dick, hole, etc...even the words "penis" and "manhood" make me giggle a little.

I see. Yeah that does depend on a lot of things mostly.

Hmmm, but I kind of think that Brian does love at least the sexual innuendos/puns a LOT. Even if Justin cringes (like in the bar scene in season 3).

Heh, I come from a fandom that pretty much MANHOOD-ED 24/7 but yeah it's freaking funny at times. I can't stand it when I see (er, no offense meant to peewees, I meant READ) 'penis' -- it's just -- meh.

I know this is such a pathetic response to the question, but honestly? I never really put much thought into it. :)

I always felt that writers tend to write sex scenes that they are comfortable with and with the style of writing that their work is already completed in will reflect that so it feels like a natural progression instead of being two different styles clashing together.

I've noticed that some authors will write very graphic sex scenes while others hint more at sex than full on graphic detail. Each style works with those authors and each story is enjoying on my end.

The part I hate is when an author tells me that there's plot to be had when it's really just one massive multi-chapter PWP. At least be honest with yourself, writing lots of sex scenes if fine, but don't tell me that there's serious business going on as well when clearly there isn't. ;)

I'm the first person to admit to readers that something is clearly PWP though I don't write many of those these days.

Nah, it's not pathetic I don't think I've given it this much thought until this weekend cuz I was rereading a few a bit more explicit fics and started thinking about the flow of it more closely -- and then my brain imploded. LOL

Yeah, sometimes it just seems more natural for just a hint of it instead of the whole *romp*.

Maybe some writers think it's plot cuz Brian seems to think sex is the entire plot of his existence -- besides work and Gucci, lolsy.

I got into an argument before with someone over fanfic that they tried to tell me was an 'emotional journey for Brian'. I finally asked them where, just the fuck (pardon my language) where Brian had time to have an emotional journey when all that was happening was massive amounts of sex. Unless the emotional journey came into play by Brian continually thinking the person he was fucking at the time was 'the hottest person like ever! OMG!' I failed to see where any emotional development came into play because unless there was talk about food and/or showers the rest of the time they were having sex. Hence my comment earlier to at least admit that's what you are writing, don't sugarcoat it ( ... )

The reality is that most "porn" writing is bad. It's not "sexy" -- it's
embarrassing -- and that includes most of the "professional"
porn I've read, even that written by gay men. But seriously,
most slash porn is laughable.

I prefer a "love" scene -- or a sex scene that grows out of the
situation. Yes, I've written purely sexual stuff, mainly for my
readers, but I'm not proud of them unless they have a better
purpose -- if they show where the relationship is, or where
someone's head is at the moment. But PWP is pretty much a
yawn to read & even more so to write.

Frankly, when you have Brian & Justin and you can look at
them together on the screen -- well, most slash fandoms
don't have that. I'd rather watch them in the flesh.

Oh yeah, that's true -- when it comes to 'porn' and its core first meaning of the word (ie lack of emotional connections/descrpitions) it's pretty 'technical' and awkward I guess.

So more of an 'eros' vibe sex scene that is still woven in/with the plot/storyline. nodnodnod

i try to fit the tone of the sexy times with whatever i'm writing.

pretty much my answer to all the questions is sometimes? maybe? depends?

I hate most, if not all, euphemisims & epithets. just use I prefer to just use their names. If I think I'm over using a name or something, perhaps rewriting a few sentences is in order.

I think I wouldn't mind reading some more Em/Drew... although I don't think i've read any before.
B/J/others isn't really written too often anymore from what I can tell.

when the talk during sex drives the plot or character development, then it's okay (or a grunt or moan here and there), but too much romantic stuff isn't really that appealing sometimes.

Plus my preferences for what I like to read are constantly shifting... I might get a fill of first-time Raw sex and then never want to read about raw sex again. or I used to read dom/sub stuff, but stay away from it for the most part, but someday I might read in that genre again. who knows.

Do you prefer the emotional undertones and thoughts-streams in ( ... )

Ditto on the "when they can work it in seamlessly" ... if not it seems forced.
And the only thing that's okay forced in sex is Justin up against the wall.
Or the table.
Or maybe the shower wall.

...I should be working.

Yeah, too much talk in B/J smexy scenes is going overboard especially if the 'Sunshines' are brought out too many times.

I know, right. I freaking love reading the emo undertones too and it's just so 'wowhza' when it seems super IC. *swoons*

lol, Thank you for your answers, helped a lot! You answered a lot of them, no worries.
