I always break out in a huge grin when you post these because I always learn something I didn't know about and this something this was was: Russia's life is a Monty Python sketch gone horribly wrong. And Poland is fabulous.
I'm in the same boat as most people. Never even heard of any of this stuff so it's nice to learn about it in such an entertaining way... that makes me want to hug Russia because damn, he went through so much crap O_O

Like, on the one hand, this was bullshit, but on the other hand, it unified the Russian state! Russia might never have become a great nation if the shit he was putting up with from his neighbors hadn't reached critical mass, so, in the long run--good for Russia!

Oooh, I guess that makes sense but... it still seems an impossibly insane way of it happening XD I can't quite imagine it happening in any other country really.
If somebody put a gun to my head and instructed me to choose between Russian history and French history, I'd probably have to take the bullet. Because on the one hand, French history, with all its passion and glory and narrative force; but on the other hand, Russian history is full of shit like this.

...I think this is one of those times when I just assume there are Fr/Ru icons, because surely Fr/Ru is a popular pairing, and surely it has piles and piles of fic and fanart and icons and everything else that popular pairings have, and I just ~mysteriously~ haven't come across them yet, because Fr/Ru is so obvious.

Have you seen the awesome film about this whole shebang, 1612? (Imagine a sensitive historical epic dealing with such sombre times. Now imagine that Prussia and Poland are vying for arteestic control over the film and the result has battles and explosions and awesome fight scenes and a noble-spirited Polish anti-hero and a magic pony of destiny). There are also doomed princesses, hussars with wings, Dimitri being shot from the mouth of a cannon, true culture-crossing slashiness, a crack team of wandering assassins fuelling the surge of Russian patriotism, dancing bears and a saint who lives in a tree. It's pure movie crack, and is just wonderful.

I've just seen trailer of this movie but bad!hussars who attack city gates on horses and Russian unicorn are so awsome XD
Best thing is that man who played that mad leader of Polish forces was also had also main role in Polish historical movie placed in simmiliar times where he's totally a good guy :P
I must say that Polish movie didn't have such huge budget but it was much more historically objective, no unicorns! D:
