Ah.  And it turns out my insurance doesn't cover plumbing or pipe damage.  They'll cover the water damage inside, but however much it costs to repair the broken pipe (or blockage, if that's what it turns out to be) will be out of pocket.  How fucking useless is that?

I hear ya. Our homeowner's wasn't a help to us the first year (i.e. septic tank), so we dropped it. Then we finally had a problem that it would have helped to correct (i.e. heater parts) but it was past the end date. Go figure.

All of that to say, I feel your pain in having an older house!

the $3k-ish quote may not be that overpriced... my friends in NYC had an elbow in their sewer main crack while I was up there last, ran them about $1.5k to replace. And that was pretty straightforward, just replace an old iron piece with a pvc piece.

The expensive part comes in because they can't get any big earth moving equipment up the hill to the place where the problem is - so instead of "two bulldozer scoops - we're in!" they have to hire a team of excavators to come in and dig it out manually.

Still, we're getting a second opinion tomorrow morning, so cross your fingers that the second guy will decide it's just a Really Bad Blockage. A lot of the evidence points there, so we'll see.

1) tell workers to excavate via front yard
2) tell workers to leave the hole
3) hobbit entrance
