I always thought that the word "changeling" meant the child who was stolen and the fairy who was left behind. That isn't true however.
According to Katharin Briggs in her book Abbey Lubbers, Banshees & Boggarts; a book which is about English fairies; it's only the fairy that is a changeling.
She wrote: Changelings were the things that were left to take the place of human babies or nursing mothers stolen by the fairies.
"Things" not people. She wrote "things" because fairies because it's not only fairies that are left as a changeling in place of the stolen child or adult ( ... )
