Jesse Ventura's back in the ring

May 27, 2009 14:29

No, not the wrestling ring. He and his deep, rough voice and slightly terrifying presence have been heading out in the the roughest territory possible -- Fox. He's had it out with Sean Hannity and Fox and Friends and he's frankly handing them their collective asses. He's got so many great quotes in the interview sessions that it's impossible to ( Read more... )

Most awesome interviews EV-AAAAR! I went back and saw clips of Ventura's WWF days, and he really hasn't changed much. Personality wise. I really thought the dude on Fox and Friends was about to pee himself.

Yes, he did. And watching Sean Hannity unable to shout a guest into submission was amazing. I hope he goes on O'Reilly.

The bits about 'I have been waterboarded. Have you been waterboarded? I'll totally waterboard you if you want.' were classic.

(BTW, there's a conservative radio host with the hilarious name of Mancow who agreed to be waterboarded to prove that it's not torture. He lasted a couple of seconds, and when he came out of it, he said that it absolutely -was- torture. It's the same sort of thing that the guy from Straight Dope was saying in the thread that I linked ages ago.)

Well Jessie Ventura was like a Navy Seal or something right? Or at least some kind of military? Ultimate Warrior is also in politics and he's not all crazy and snarling either. He's kinda a arrogant shit but he doesnt seem to let anyone yell him down either. In fact someone was yelling at him once, possibly accusing him of being racist? I dunno. Warrior just stood there calmly.

Though I'm NOT certain i like someone trying to use physical intimidation in these. That's basically saying "oh I cant win via a good argument, uh my muscles are bigger than yours!" Shouldn't we be getting AWAY from that? Otherwise the strong rule the weak again and I'll break out my club and start looking for the hot women first and beat up the weaker men and keep an eye out for the bigger ones. Ninja Caveman ftw!

On any reasonable show, I'd be with you on the intimidation thing. But Fox has long made it their strategy to win "debates" by intimidating and generally shouting over whoever they're "debating" with. It's delicious to see someone come in and shove a big dose of their own medicine down their throats.

There's no convincing the pundits, and probably no convincing the viewers, but it's nice to see someone coming in and making soundbyte-worthy arguments loud enough to at least introduce a little bit of cognitive dissonance.

I dont really agree with him on the whole having to have done something to talk about it. That's a very big argument fallacy. No one but other other presidents could criticize each other then, criminals could only criticize each other, ect. Shouldn't have to be military to have an opinion on things.

In general, I agree.

However (and I know this wasn't what he was talking about, but.) before I hear anyone saying that waterboarding isn't torture, I want to see them waterboarded first. Because it is. I have yet to find a case of someone being waterboarded and coming away saying anything else.

I also think there's a certain element of 'things out there aren't the way you think they are, and you'd know that if you'd been there'. Like think of the anime fanboys and their unrealistic opinions about Japanese culture. There's a certain point where you have to tell them to shut up unless they've done the research. Pundits like Hannity have a weird, unrealistic view of what they think is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, a view that's being pretty much unanimously contradicted. So it might also be that Ventura, knowing the things he knows and having seen the things he's seen, gets a little bit sick of the ignorance and falsehood.
