Chapter 1Summary: Matt decides a day succumbing to each other's wants is what's best for their relationship.
“Tonight’s a date night ok? It’s not scientist and guinea pig night. I want you to stop questioning me. Matt was a stickler about his first want. Mohinder had been sure he’d give up after the first day, but he didn’t. In fact on the fifth day when Mohinder had tried to start something under the covers, Matt had gotten up and gone to the couch. He‘s insisted on sleeping out there for the remainder of the time. He’d limited all touching at home to brief kisses and friendly hugs. Suddenly Mohinder felt selfish for wanting more than kissing in the dark, it was better than not kissing him at all.
Now he was sitting in the middle of a very packed restaurant feeling alone. In ever direction there were couples dressed in their finest. No one else was alone and he was worried he’d been stood up. Matt was almost half an hour late. Perhaps this had all been too much for Matt. Maybe these two week of absence had been Matt’s way of giving himself time to think it over. He could have used this time to figure out how to let Mohinder down lightly. Mohinder figured he’d pushed his luck too hard when he’d asked Matt to come out with him.
Just as all hope had fled his mind he suddenly saw a familiar figure at the hostess’ podium. Amongst the white marble statues and copies of famous paintings he saw a true work of art. Matt had kept his promise and had remembered one of Mohinder’s want. Matt had gone all out and gotten a tux. It was black and freshly pressed. Under it was a loose fitting white shirt tucked into his pants and a bow tie. The blacks pants he had on begged to be seen from the back.
Matt looked adorable yet somehow handsome. It was awkward yet rather appealing. He turned from the hostess and found Mohinder easily in the crowd. Not only was he the only one sitting alone but he was in a tan suit as requested. It was one he already owned but that didn’t mean he didn’t feel awkward. Under it he wore a powered pink shirt that made his dark skin stand out all the more. He saw the smile creep over Matt’s face upon seeing him and it all felt worth it.
Mohinder waved at him and the hostess looked only somewhat convinced. She bowed her head to him and gave him a menu. Matt walked between the tables looking awkward and having to squeeze between some chairs. Mohinder winced, sympathetic to his plight. After a difficult struggle Matt made it to the table.
Matt went right up to him and kissed his cheek. It was a soft, sweet gesture but it meant everything to him. All of Mohinder’s worries were smoothed under those lips.
“Hey hon. Sorry I was late. The dry cleaning lost my tux,” he said pulling at the edge of his coat. He sat down across from Mohinder and started looking at the menu.
“That’s perfectly alright,” he said.
Mohinder realized he didn’t really know what to say. He’d dragged Matt out of his element and now felt awkward himself. It didn’t help that he couldn’t sake the feeling déjà vu. Had he been in a similar position before?
“What are you going to have?” Mohinder asked. He could read the struggling on Matt’s face as he tried to understand the menu. Finally he put it down looking frustrated.
“I’ll have what you’re having,” he said rubbing his eyes in annoyance. Matt knew that Mohinder would blame it on the menu being impossible to read, which was good. He didn’t want Mohinder to guess what the real problem was. The thoughts springing up around them.
I thought this was a classy place. I didn’t know they allowed that here came from an older woman at the right.
Wow they must have gotten together before he put on the weight the skinny blond two tables over thought.
Could they be brothers? Yeah that’s it brothers. Don’t look like brothers. Maybe their parents adopted the black one from a 3rd world country like Brad and Angelina before it was cool. came from a confused bus boy.
Mohinder watched helpless as Matt’s condition seemed only to decay further. The waitress came by and Mohinder ordered for both of them. The woman was quick about it and for that Mohinder was grateful. The moment she was gone he said, “I want to know what’s wrong. You have to fallow the rules you put in place Matthew.”
Matt wondered why it was that whenever Mohinder said his full name his toes curled? He sighed and decided to tell him the truth. He leaned in very closely and whispered as low as he could.
“People are thinking about us,” he said and backed up, sitting straight again.
“So? What’s the problem?” Mohinder asked gently. He didn’t really want to know what they were thinking. He could guess that not all of it was nice.
“It’s not all that flattering,” he explained than turned the conversation inward and spoke with his mind instead. He did love that ability. It’s bad enough that I have to listen to the X-rated thoughts about you all the time. Now I have to listen to everyone thinking about…us.
Mohinder’s face changed to one of disgust and confusion. Their thinking X-rated thoughts about us?
Haven‘t picked up on it yet, but I’m sure someone in the mix is. Mostly it’s just dismay that two men are together.
Well we expected that didn’t we? Mohinder thought back.
Sure but it’s still uncomfortable. Not to mention this place is sooo not my kind of place. I can’t even start to guess what to do with the million forks in front of me.
Mohinder didn’t think anything back. Instead he simple held his hand across the white table cloth.
“I want you to hold my hand,” he said his voice and his eyes showing how serious it was. Matt slid his hand into the other man’s and blushed. There was a reaction to it but he knew he could block it out. He’d always thought the world went blank when he was touching Mohinder.
“Thanks,” Matt said with a side ways grin, “So how was work?”
“We made some real progress. We figured out that one of the samples we had was different from the others….” Mohinder trailed off talking about the work but Matt had gotten rather distracted. He’d picked up on a few interesting words and started listening.
His hands went up the back of the other man’s labcoat and he could feel the other man’s skin through his shirt. He moved his body closer to the heat of the other man and felt something bump against his leg. He smirked glad to know he was still able to easily stimulate him. Or perhaps it was the fact they were in his office, with the window open and the door unlocked. He would never have thought the other to be an exhibitionist.
Mohinder had stopped talking and started listening to the thoughts he assumed Matt was sending to him. He’d picked up on the conversation at lab coat.
“I hate the fact you wear a lab coat. Your such a conformist”
“If I didn’t wear one won’t I be just conforming to your opinion” Wilson asked not struggling as House removed his jacket.
“What was that?” Mohinder asked his eyes wide and his temper obviously close to fuming.
“What are you talking about?”
“What am I talking about? What are you….” he said and than visible lowered his voice, “Thinking at me?”
“Thinking at-” Matt went to ask something before a realization crept on his face I think I’m transmitting that thought over to you like a radio.
I didn’t know you could do that
Nether did I.
That’s quiet an interesting development. I wonder how long the range is. Do you even have to hear the thought yourself to transmit it? How many people can you have hearing a single thought? Do you think it’d be possible to use you as a sort of radio tower?
“Mohinder” Matt said aloud so that the other man couldn’t keep asking questions he didn’t have an answer too, “Tonight’s a date night ok? It’s not scientist and guinea pig night. I want you to stop questioning me.”
“Alright,” Mohinder said not having realized his enthusiasm was so disliked. He felt like he was a boy who’d had his hands slapped by his parents for wanting to eat dessert before dinner.
It’s the lady in the back thinking about that by the way. She’s on a date with this guy whose really into himself. She’s bored stiff so she’s thinking about writing something. I think it’s called fan fiction., Matt explained figuring it was safer to do it silently.
What’s fan fiction?
I think it’s stories fans write about their favorite Tv shows or something. The one she’s thinking about is House based I think. You know that doctor show you can’t stand because of all the ‘unrealistic illness’
Why would someone waste their time on that?
No idea.
They both shared a secret smile that the waitress that came with their food definitely noticed. She placed both of their plates before them and told them that if they needed anything to ask her. The couple ate in comfortable silence. About half way into their meal Matt finally spoke.
“I love that,” he said.
“Love what?” Mohinder asked looking up at him.
“That we can just sit here and eat. We don’t have to talk every second of every day. It’s nice to be able to sit back and just be with someone. I guess that’s the upside to being with a fellow guy,” Matt explained.
“I hadn’t thought of it like that. Than again there are so many perks to being with you Matthew that it’s hard to find them all.”
“Perks?” Matt asked raising an eyebrow and tilting his head to the side, “Go on. I want you to flatter me.”
“Well laughter for one. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my life. Safety. I’ve never trusted someone as much as you. A compassionate and loving father for the most wonderful child I‘ve ever meet. A handsome-”
“Alright alright. I take it back. I don’t want you to flatter me,” Matt said ducking his head. His cheeks were beat red. Suddenly he looked even more awkward in the suit than ever.
“Alright no more flattery,” Mohinder agreed finishing the rest of his crab cake.
“Thanks and thanks for ordering me a steak. I don’t think I could stomach what your having. It smells horrible,” Matt admitted.
“It’s actually quiet good,” Mohinder told him.
Matt didn’t believe him but still nodded.
The waitress came by and asked them about dessert. Matt said a quick no and was handed the bill. He looked down at it his eyes becoming saucers.
“Please tell me I’m reading that backwards,” he said handing the check to Mohinder. Mohinder shook his head and than took out his wallet and his credit card. The waitress came back and took the card and the recite saying she’d be right back.
“That was damn lot of money,” Matt said somewhere between angry and surprised.
“It was worth it and I’ve been saving for quiet some time in preparation for this evening,” he explained.
“You saved up? Damn, Mohinder how long have you been planning this?” Matt asked bewildered.
Mohinder couldn’t help but smile. A normal Matt was adorable in a suit but a confused Matt was so sweet he was sure he’d ruined sugar for himself.
“Since the first of the year. I wanted to think of someway to get you out on a date. I thought perhaps you’d be unable to say no to a date on Valentines day.”
“You’ve been wanting to go out on a date that long? Why didn’t you just tell me?” Matt asked reaching over and taking the other’s hand in his own.
“I didn’t think you’d be willing to. I wasn’t sure how serious you were about me, about changing your life so drastically.”
“Listen here you. I don’t…date lightly. When I say I love someone it’s for keeps. If that someone happens to be a guy by some trick of luck, than that stays the same. It’s a lot to get used to, yeah, but if that means I get to wake up by you everyday, man I’ll do it,” Matt said his voice full of passion and was lyrical in it’s own way.
Mohinder went to talk but his voice caught letting out only a squeak. He was touched, deeply. No one had ever talked like that to him, about him. He gulped just to remind himself he could move. His eyes scanned Matt’s face and all he saw was open honesty.
Without thinking he leaned over and kissed Matt deeply. He hadn’t meant to push Matt to be physically affectionate in public tonight but after what he’d said he couldn’t help himself. He’d been asking for it.
Matt was handling it rather well. He was kissing back and ignoring the explosion of thoughts aimed at them. Why did it seem harder to block out thoughts that were about him? What they were saying didn’t matter to him right now. All that mattered was the taste of the other’s milk chocolate lips against his. They separated but stayed a breath away as they panted, identical smiles forming on very different faces.
“I want to buy you ice cream,” Matt said out of no where making Mohinder laugh.
“Alright I can allow that,” he said and than went in for another kiss, but was stopped by a cough behind them.
Their blushing waitress was standing with his credit card and after dinner mints in hand. She gave them their items and walked off.
Mohinder wasn’t sure how Matt would react. He was worried the other man be intensely embarrassed at having kissed him in public now that he’d come out of the daze.
“Don’t worry so much. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Anyways I kind of wanted you to kiss me if you can believe it,” Matt said getting up.
Mohinder shook his head and said, “I can’t, but I will since you won’t lie.”
“I won’t,” Matt said going over to help Mohinder with his jacket. He paused and kissed the man’s cheek before whispering, “Your suit looks amazing.”
“I look like I’m ready to go on safari,” he complained but was glad for Matt’s sudden openness. Matt chuckled a bit and took his hand as he lead the way towards the door. Mohinder’s eyes were scanning the room. Among the angry eyes or downcast ones their was a different type of staring. There was an another gay couple at the other end who was looking at them enviously and so were a couple of women at random tables. The woman, the one that had been day dreaming, was basically drooling over them
