Quidditch matches generally fell into one of two categories for Kurt: the ones he mildly enjoyed but really only went to because Puck insisted (he figured they would be more fun next year, when he would no longer be expected to get on a broom and do anything even remotely like this), and the ones he honestly did not want to attend. Because when he was having a bad day, the last thing he wanted to do was to go stand outside by the pitch in cold weather, panicking quietly every time a player slipped a little on their broom.

Today’s match was solidly in the second category; it was only ten thirty and already Kurt wanted nothing more than to crawl back into bed and wake up tomorrow. Puck was having none of it.

“Kurt, come on! If we don’t hurry up, we’re gonna miss the start.”

Kurt sighed, slumping backwards to drape himself over his bed. They should make a kind of magic that let him sink into the mattress, he mused. That sounded awesome. “I don’t really want to go, Puck.”

“What do you mean. It’s our match. We’re playing Hufflepuff!” ( ... )

It took less than ten minutes after Puck slammed the door behind him for the anger to drain away from Kurt’s body where he lay on the bed and for the guilt to start seeping in. Because it was just… It was a really bad day. He probably would have yelled at Sam for doing something like breathing next to him if he’d been the one there, instead, because he was just that on edge.

Except it had been Puck who’d been standing a few feet away when he finally boiled over, Puck who’d been trying to help, even if it kind of made Kurt feel useless sometimes. Maybe they should have talked about it when he didn’t feel like tearing off someone’s head, though.

Kurt glanced out the window, trying to guess the time from an entirely unhelpful view of the empty grounds, on the other side of the school from the Quidditch pitch. He probably still had, what, ten minutes or so to make it down the the field? Just enough time to catch the beginning, and to apologize without actually having to say anything ( ... )

Plot device! :D
(and I've always kind of wondered about who it was who went late to the game and found them.)

The woman is not meant to be much of a mystery. It's McGonagall; he's just panicked and can't see her well from behind.
