Originally, Puck had planned to stay at Hogwarts over the winter holidays. At least, he’d planned to consider staying, because his ma really wanted him home, he knew, but he hadn’t been sure it would be a very welcoming reunion. By the time Professor McGonagall went around with the sign-up sheet for the holidays, wanting to know who would be leaving and who would not, Puck was surprised by how ready he was to go home.
It was just that Hogwarts was starting to feel sort of… not safe. Between Colin lying in the hospital wing and working not to mention Kurt’s family history to anyone at all and always have to walk around in a group of at least three (because he wouldn’t leave Kurt alone anymore if there were people and monsters who maybe didn’t like him, and Sam had latched onto them after hearing it would be months before Colin could do anything but lie there), and more when someone else got nervous and wanted to join them, yeah

A voice entering suddenly into their midst and shouting “Hi!” was all the warning they got before Kurt was engulfed with blond hair and long arms that clung to him tightly, and Puck kept his laughter down until Kurt finally stopped looking so amusingly shocked and closed his eyes to return the hug. Then Puck laughed. Quietly. So that Kurt wouldn’t see it

Puck was interrupted from wondering whether it might be better to spend time learning how to throw a good punch instead when both Professors came down off the stage and moved through the crowd.
“What’re they doing?” he muttered to Kurt, who had probably been paying more attention.
“They’re putting us in pairs to practice. They still haven’t taught us anything yet
