Snape made sure everything was in place in the other room, before returning to the main room for Remus. He wasn't exactly sure what he was doing, if this was supposed to be romantic, or just something he wanted to share with Remus. Either way, it left him nervous enough that his palms were actually sweating ( Read more... )

Remus, as was his wont, showed up about five minutes before six o'clock at the prescribed place, wearing a coat over his buttondown shirt. "Hello, Severus."

"No, you don't." He accepted the glass, and hit it lightly against Snape's. "Cheers."

Snape sipped his wine and looked at the fire. "Are you eating better? Since coming here?"

The real question he wanted to ask was, Do you really want to go back to your old life?

"It certainly helps that I can ask for a sandwich and have it appear when I'm buried under a pile of book." He looked over the rim of his wine glass at Snape. "I helps that I have someone to drag me out of the books upon occasion too."

"Do you ever think of not going back? Of just staying here as much as you could?"

There was a small part of Severus that wanted to do that exact thing. He was finding happiness here, odd as it seemed.

"I... don't know if I could, though the thought is not unpleasant." He hadn't given it much thought, more then content to just sit back and, for the first time in a long time, just enjoy what was happening.

"There's the war. Dumbldore has things he needs me to do."

"I have an odd, and probably not the least bit accurate, theory, about this place. We're told time stops when we're here in the room. What if, there's so many versions of us, because someone is always there to carry-on, whether we are or not. I've seen both older and younger versions of me, post-war versions of me. Maybe it doesn't matter, what we do here. It will all happen as it is supposed to happen."

He took a large sip of wine.

"And maybe I'm full of complete rubbish."

"I'm not sure if it's a relief or guilt at the idea of some other Remus taking my place out there." Remus sighed, and took a sip of his own wine. "I've only met one mirror of mine so far."

"It's just a theory, and more than likely something I've used to justify staying here as long as I have. After talking with a future Draco Malfoy, I'm not sure I want to go back."

He looked at Lupin, searching his eyes for any signs of disbelief of disdain.

Severus wasn't a coward, he was just tired. Of everything.

"You're braver then I am. I've avoided most people, because I don't want to know how soon the end is coming." Call it the pessimist in him, but he doesn't see himself surviving a second war.

"I know my outcome," he said softly. "I'm not afraid of it, but I didn't know that I would find something good, before I reached my outcome." He looked meaningfully at Remus. "It makes it harder to face."

"Severus." Remus flinched, understanding what Snape knew without hearing the specific words. In an effort to erase the haunted look he leaned in and kissed him, softly.

When Remus kissed him, Severus wrapped his arms around him, holding on to him for deal. He wanted a chance at happiness, and here, he could have.

Maybe he was selfish, but he'd made so many sacrifices for Dumbledore and the Order and from what Draco told him, it's just going to get infinitely worse.

Was it so wrong to take happiness now that he'd found it?

Remus rested his cheek against the other man's, closing his eyes and breathing in the scent that was rapidly becoming familiar. And comforting. "Nothing's going to happen while we're here."

Severus breathed deeply, the feel and scent of Remus more comforting than he ever imagined it could be. He'd never allowed himself to be this vulnerable except with Dumbledore, and most of the time he forced it out of him.

"A Gryffindore and a Slytherin, sitting watching the sunset together. I'd say just about anything is possible after that." Even them, finding a way to survive.
