So I watched the first Episode of Game of Thrones

Sep 21, 2011 21:32

I broke down and watched the first episode. I've been not really avoiding it, but not really going out of my way to do it out of laziness and strange loyalty to Legend of the Seeker.

Anyway, my first impressions are under the cut. If you comment, remember I'm on ep1 S1, so don't spoil me too much. <3

Lol, people compare these two shows?! As others have put it more aptly with wonderful analogies, there is absolutely no basis for comparison. LotS is fun, non-srs happytimes. GoT is like...RIP YOUR HEART OUT ANGST AND DRAMA, RARRR.

I also got into the show for 'Savage Horse Man and Blonde Malfoy Wannabe', lol. Drogo and Dany, btw.

Like you said, it's the difference between Merlin and Camelot- there's no competition because they're catering to completely different audiences.

Oh, Drogo and Dany.

I'm still gonna call them Savage Horse Man and Malfoy Wannabe.

Lol, we would have the same ship.

To be technical, it's Daenerys, but much easier to call her Dany, as everyone else does. But Malfoy Wannabe works, too!

Hee, typical!

I'm about to watch episode 2, so I'll be posting my impressions of that one some time tonight. We'll see if I get more interested. <3

GoT is definitely not a replacement for LotS. Now, the books for GoT I think make a decent replacement for Terry Goodkind's books, but the shows are too different. LotS isn't exactly light hearted, but it is. You have your heroes, and you know that they'll probably be alive in the end. There is really no real hero in GoT, and its a much more depressing (if I'm being honest) storyline at times. But I like the realism and the political manuevers. And it takes balls to kill off characters that weren't set up to be the villain and take the fall. Its a nice departure from a lot of other plots and shows.

I have to say, I didn't get caught after the first episode, but once I was through 2 I was hooked.

That's what I was kind of thinking, that LotS could have been a lot like this if they had followed the books more closely. And then I took a moment to think THANK GOD THEY DIDN'T FOLLOW THE BOOKS MORE CLOSELY.

And yes, I know exactly what you mean about it being lighthearted and not at the same time.

I'm about to watch ep 2, so we'll see how it goes!

I don't see ASoIaF as anything like LotS - and I have yet to see the show Game of Thrones - but it's compelling in its own way.

Also, ASoIaF is actually somewhat similar to the Goodkind books, except much better written. Incredibly much so. So, I do recommend the books.

The politics side is really emphasized in ASoIaF - where Goodkind tends to simplify that stuff, Martin complicates it, which feels more real. However, there is no well understood set of rules for the magic in ASoIaF, which bothers me a little...

All that snow is probably because Winter Is Coming ;)

Maybe I'll pick up the books over Christmas then, when I have more time to read.

Lol, Winter is Coming. I remember, I used that phrase symbolically in Castle in the Air and Bex got all excited and asked if it was an ASOIAF reference. And I was like... lol no it's from the song I used for the trailer video?

Re: the rules of magic in ASOIAF - My impression is that at the time the story begins the rules are unclear because magic has almost disappeared from the world.

When it begins to re-emerge at the beginning of the series, most of the main characters are so caught up in their power-plays that they don't see or understand the big picture, except for the Night's Watch - and nobody listens to them anymore.

(I'll shut up now and retreat)

I don't want to get too specific here, because Pris is still at the beginning...but I've finished the third book now, and I've yet to see a coherent set of rules for the magic, even though there's plenty of it around now.

I like the Night's Watch - I think Jon Snow is the only character I've consistently liked (the others, as you said, first I like them, then I learn more about them and I really don't, or the reverse...I didn't think it was possible, but I've started to warm up to Jaime Lannister now.)

I may end up posting some thoughts about the series up to how far I've read.

baha, I love your names for the characters. I think they should start calling them that now instead of their real names.
This show is definitely not a Seeker replacement. It's not fun/lively/pretty. It's definitely more depressing/intense/gritty. But, it's neat in it's own special way. I've read the books, so I know what happens, and yet it's still interesting to see it all playing out. So, keep watching! Or not...
