So I watched the first Episode of Game of Thrones

Sep 21, 2011 21:32

I broke down and watched the first episode. I've been not really avoiding it, but not really going out of my way to do it out of laziness and strange loyalty to Legend of the Seeker.

Anyway, my first impressions are under the cut. If you comment, remember I'm on ep1 S1, so don't spoil me too much. <3

I don't see ASoIaF as anything like LotS - and I have yet to see the show Game of Thrones - but it's compelling in its own way.

Also, ASoIaF is actually somewhat similar to the Goodkind books, except much better written. Incredibly much so. So, I do recommend the books.

The politics side is really emphasized in ASoIaF - where Goodkind tends to simplify that stuff, Martin complicates it, which feels more real. However, there is no well understood set of rules for the magic in ASoIaF, which bothers me a little...

All that snow is probably because Winter Is Coming ;)

Maybe I'll pick up the books over Christmas then, when I have more time to read.

Lol, Winter is Coming. I remember, I used that phrase symbolically in Castle in the Air and Bex got all excited and asked if it was an ASOIAF reference. And I was like... lol no it's from the song I used for the trailer video?

Re: the rules of magic in ASOIAF - My impression is that at the time the story begins the rules are unclear because magic has almost disappeared from the world.

When it begins to re-emerge at the beginning of the series, most of the main characters are so caught up in their power-plays that they don't see or understand the big picture, except for the Night's Watch - and nobody listens to them anymore.

(I'll shut up now and retreat)

I don't want to get too specific here, because Pris is still at the beginning...but I've finished the third book now, and I've yet to see a coherent set of rules for the magic, even though there's plenty of it around now.

I like the Night's Watch - I think Jon Snow is the only character I've consistently liked (the others, as you said, first I like them, then I learn more about them and I really don't, or the reverse...I didn't think it was possible, but I've started to warm up to Jaime Lannister now.)

I may end up posting some thoughts about the series up to how far I've read.

OMG - I hope you post.

I need to know what your feelingzz were at the end of the 3rd book.

Ah, yes - Jaimie ^_^

(Will not hijack Pris's entry and WILL shut up now.)

Lol you can hijack my entry all you want so long as you don't like. Pull a "SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE" on me.

Must remember to mark for spoilers, though - that's why I won't get into it now...
