Aiden had discovered that, despite being generally cluey and observant, Pat could be quite dense at times. He was completely oblivious that a surprise party had been organised for him. Technically it was a party for both him and Cameron, but the surprise was all Pat's because Cameron had been instrumental in pulling it all off. Pat really had thought Aiden was just taking him to Luke's bar to listen to music. It had also been touch-n-go for a minute there when Pat said he was tired and didn't feel like going out. Aiden was torn, knowing everyone was waiting at the bar with the surprise all ready to go, but if Pat wasn't feeling well enough to go out, especially only being discharged from hospital that morning, Aiden was going to have to pull the plug.
But Pat had relented, saying they could go out for a little while, agreeing that he could use a distraction. They had already spent the afternoon together at Aiden's apartment where Aiden had given Pat the
diamond Century bracelet from Tiffany & Co. They might not have been able to follow it up with a hot round of birthday sex, but they did have one hell of a make out session. The surprise had come off without a hitch. Pat had nearly fallen out of his wheelchair in shock and it took a good half hour before he could stop crying and/or gaping at everyone in the room. This was the first time Aiden had managed to be in the same room with Pat's parents and older brother. He had succinctly avoided them at the hospital and he had no idea what they were thinking of him. But they politely introduced themselves when Aiden had brought Pat into the party, but both Aiden and Pat had been engulfed by guests before anything else could be said. Aiden made a mental note to remind himself to make an effort to approach Mr and Mrs Preston once the party fell into a happy and with that note, his gut clenched nervously causing him to avoid the refreshment table for the moment. He could have sworn they were giving him pointed looks across the room. He hoped he was just paranoid because the older brother looked scarier (and taller) than Cameron.
Aiden was now sitting at one of the bar tables with Pat and Tara, his arm slung casually and protectively around Pat's shoulders where he sat beside him in the wheelchair sipping a Diet Coke with a cocktail umbrella stuck in the side of it. Most other people were mingling or dancing to the music on the Juke box. Up on the stage, Lachlan was standing with Tara's cousin and Tab's bass player, Keiran. Keiran was already hooked up to his bass, waving his hand at something in the distance as he spoke to Lachlan, and Lachlan was looping an electric guitar over his head and adjusting the strap. He continued to talk to Keiran whilst adjusting the instrument and tweaking at those peg things at the end of it. Tara was chewing on her nails nervously as she watched her husband, clearly not sure if he was going to do anything more than feel the sleek instrument up. "Is he going to sing?" Aiden asked her curiously. He knew the night was going to just be good music, singing, Karaoke and dancing. It wasn't ever going to be anything extravagant. It was more about who was there and what the twins enjoyed more than anything. As it was, there were more people there than Aiden had even anticipated, including a large handful of Cameron's football team mates.
