Post-series episode: Rapsblüte no Yoru

May 03, 2007 22:15

Yaaay, my first contribution to the Princess Tutu fandom!

As I let slip earlier, while surfing around Japanese PT fansites, I came across a report of a post-series live drama performed by the seiyuu and written by Ikuko Itoh. My first reaction was "No way, is this for real?!" because I hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere in the English fandom (though admittedly, I've only been into Princess Tutu for a couple of months now). But after finding more reports, I confirmed that it did indeed happen. This is all the information I could find from these fan reports:

On March 21, 2004, at the Gold Crown Town Fantasy 3.AKT Princess Tutu only event (an event to display and sell Princess Tutu doujinshi), there was a talkshow with Ikuko Itoh scheduled, but to everyone's surprise, director Junichi Satou also appeared, along with the seiyuu for Ahiru, Mytho, Autor, and Uzura. (Fakir and Rue's seiyuu did not attend. It seems that Takahiro Sakurai couldn't come because he was at a seiyuu event for Gash Bell.) On top of that, they held a live drama recording written by Itoh-san that takes place after the last episode of the anime! It was apparently about 20-30 minutes long, and yes, Autor plays a large role. XD

Of all the reports I've found, Goma's is by far the most detailed, but she says it's written from memory so there are probably mistakes and parts missing/out of order. So I translated her account of the drama word-for-word, but also inserted some notes (in green) with details/inconsistencies I found in other reports. (You can read the translation without my notes here in case this gets messy and confusing.)

The Night of Rapsblüte

"Quaack.."
Ahiru seems to be swimming on the river during a night with a beautiful moon

It's been a while since then, and every day I'm happy.
It's fun talking with my bird friends, and Madam Pelican is a little noisy, but...it's fun.
And besides......whenever I look up, Fakir is always there.

Ahiru: "I've come all the way to Gold Crown Academy....somehow I feel like dancing."
Saying that, Ahiru climbs onto the bank and is surprised to find the whole surface covered with rape blossoms.

Ahiru: "Gwak!!"

Autor: "Oh? What's this?"
It seems he stepped on Ahiru..

Ahiru: "Gwakgwak!!"
Ahiru protests.

Autor: "Oh it's you, Ahiru-kun...isn't Fakir with you?"
Autor backs away as Ahiru tries to talk to him.

Autor: "Sorry, but could you not get so close? I'll start sneezing from my bird allergies."
(The mystery of his dislike of birds is solved.)

Ahiru: "Charon-san and Raetsel-san had a baby so Fakir went to the celebration."

Charon WTF? Uhh, none of the other reports mention anything about Charon (they just say "Raetsel had a baby"), so I think Goma might have made a mistake here. Because why would Fakir have to go out of town unless Raetsel was married to Hans? And you'd think the other reports would comment about something like that. O_O Unless Raetsel married Hans but still had okay, I'm gonna stop thinking right there.

Anyway, Yame Shouka thinks Raetsel-having-a-baby would put this story about one year after the last episode?

Autor: "I see....by the way, did you come to see the Night of Rapsblüte too?"

Ahiru: "Rap..Rapsblüte?"
Ahiru asks curiously.

Ahiru: "Rapsblüte are rape blossoms, right?"

Here, Autor goes Hnph! with his nose as if making fun of her.
Autor: "The Night of Rapsblüte is when once every 50 years, all the rape blossoms bloom simultaneously on a night of the full moon. According to what I've researched in the library, in the records of a student from 50 years ago, there is an eye-witness account."

According to Yame Shouka, Autor also says that "There is a legend that mysterious things happen" on that night.

Ahiru heaves a sigh (lol)
Autor: "And tonight, the weather, the date, everything matches with the past data!"
Autor is full of confidence.

"Besides that, you're in the music department so maybe you should be studying piano instead..."
Ahiru mutters.

Autor: "Did you say something?"

Ahiru: "Huh? Autor can understand me."
Hnph, he laughs at her with his nose again.
Autor: "Anything can happen tonight and it wouldn't be strange."

Ahiru: "The moon is so pretty..."
(Here, a man wearing a mask of the moon appears from behind..it's a great hit in the assembly)

Yame Shouka: The rape blossoms begin to bloom with the moonlight. Without realizing it, Ahiru is able to speak in the human language. And then Uzura appears, coming down from the moon.

Autor: "What's that? An onion?"
Ahiru: "!!"

Uzura: "Ho~ Ahiru zura~"
*Tototon* (her drum)

Erino Hazuki, Uzura's seiyuu, was wearing a small drum around her neck. XD

Ahiru: "Uzura-chan!!"
Ahiru: "Uzura-chan! Where were you?"

Uzura: "I've been wandering the interval of time with the old man zura."

Ahiru: "By the old man do you mean Drosselmyer-san? Then where's Drosselmyer-san?"

"Drosselmyer?!!" <--(Autor's switch is on)
Uzura: "The old man is busy with updating the site zura, sorry he's so irresponsible zura."
(Here, Director Satou is rolling with laughter.)

There were apparently many private jokes involving the official website.

Autor: "Why didn't you bring him with you?!"
Clearly, his Drosselmyer otaku switch is on lol

Uzura: "One more is coming zura."

Autor: "One more?"
Mytho: ".......Tutu."

Ahiru: "Mytho!!"
(I can never forget Ahiru's sad voice here)

Mytho: "It's been a while...."
Uzura: "He was dancing on the balcony so I brought him zura."
(....At your own pace as usual, Prince.)
Autor: "Prince Siegfried from the story!! Myu...Mytho-san."
(He sounds as emotional as if he were meeting Drosselmyer.)

It seems Mytho was dancing on the balcony because the moon was beautiful when Uzura came to pick him up.

Mytho: "Are you Fakir's friend...?"
Autor: "I'm Autor!"
Mytho: "You were the one who helped Fakir? Thank you..."
(How does he know..)
Autor: "No! It was an honor." (only dimly remember)

Mytho: "If I remember correctly, during our ballet lessons you were asked by Neko-sensei to accompany us on piano."
Autor: "Yes, I was asked to accompany you on piano by Neko-sensei 11 times, and I passed by you with Neko-sensei in the hall 27 times."
(Jeez, Autor's in high spirits (lol))

Mytho: "Fakir sometimes sees cows and alligators flying in the sky, so I'm worried. Could you take care of Fakir?"
Autor: "Yes!! Mytho-san, please leave him to me."
(He's been left to him without having a say, Fakir's in a pinch (lol))

Yame Shouka: Autor says that "I'm the one who can help Fakir! He needs someone with a calm brain like me."

Ahiru: "Mytho? How is Rue-chan?"
Mytho: "Rue is doing well."

Mytho: "It seems Rue is good at singing too and she's a popular princess among the people."
Autor: "Rue-san?"

About Rue singing-
Yame Shouka: Could this have to do with something involving the seiyuu? There were some other seiyuu-involved lines inserted elsewhere.

Uzura: "Mytho is rabu-rabu with Rue zura~"
Autor: "Could you be quiet for a while..." His voice is lacking energy and sounds like he might cry
(He knows they're rivals in love..is that okay?)

Ahiru: "Thank goodness... Mytho. "The Concluding Volume of The Prince and the Raven" got published. It's not a story without an end anymore."
Ahiru: "And also, soon Fakir's going to dance an all-male version of La Sylphide with Matthew Bourne-sensei's choreography!"

Mytho: "Fakir....I always feel like I'm connected with Fakir..the more my country becomes peaceful, I can feel him close by."
(It's...mostly dim recollection. Just the nuance of it.)

Ahiru: "Mytho...."
"You should meet Fakir! He's coming back tomorrow..so then.."

Mytho: "I can't..I can only come here because the interval of time is connected tonight..see, the moon is already sinking this much."
(The man playing the moon sinks down (lol) The assembly bursts into laughter again)
"I see..."

Mytho: "Princess Tutu.....thanks to you, I can be like this. Thank you."
Ahiru: "I wanted to see you smile, so my wish is already granted." (only dimly remember)

Mytho: "Princess Tutu, I wanted to be with you longer. I wanted to talk with you like this longer....to me, you are the light....because you are someone very special..."
(?? Mytho/Ahiru?)

Mytho: "But, I have to protect Rue. Rue needs me...."
(I'm sorry, it's completely out of memory...because I was so overwhelmed..(lol) I should take my reeling in moderation)

Yame Shouka: Mytho wanted to be with Tutu longer, but he says he's the only one who can make Rue happy. (A line that's extremely difficult to interpret)

Mytho: "Tutu...you have done so much for me, but I couldn't do anything for you."
"Is there something I can do for you, Tutu?"

Ahiru: "......Mytho! I.........."
"No, nevermind..."
(Ahiru sounds incredibly sad)

Mytho: "It's almost time..."
"See you again....Tutu...."
(Jeez..I don't remember any of it)

Ahiru: "Can we meet again?"
Mytho: "Surely we will meet again..."
Mytho (or is it Yanagi-san? lol): "We can meet again, when Sakurai-kun is here."
(The assembly explodes with laughter)

Mytho recites something in German.
"Waaao!!" <--(Uzura)

Here, Mytho says his never-ending feelings for Tutu (if someone remembers this part please tell me~)
And at the end,
Mytho: ".......Ahiru."

Ahiru: "I get the feeling I heard Mytho's voice at the end."

I am a duck....I can't wear toe shoes, I can't dance.. (I'm sorry, I don't remember) But inside my chest there is a sparkling gem that will never be broken.

Yame Shouka's take on the ending: "I am Ahiru, and I am Princess Tutu."
Ahiru clearly addresses herself as Princess Tutu in the present tense. (Overall, aside from the part where she stopped herself from saying something to Mytho, she seemed to hold confidence in herself and talked very clearly. How reassuring) It seems she can dance too.

"But in my heart there is a gem that will never be broken."

The end.

Other Details

-Apparently Debussy's Claire De Lune was playing during the last part. Very appropriate, as always!

-Rapsblüte: Rape blossoms (Na-no-hana)
No one was quite sure if the word was ラプスブリューテ or ラプスブリューゲ (or ラプスブデューゲ or ラプスフリューゲ), but ラプスブリューテ turned up the most often, and "blüte" means "blossom" in German so that makes the most sense to me. So Rapsblüte it is!

-Matthew Bourne:
This reference probably came from the fact that Matthew Bourne (an award-winning choreographer) was putting on a performance at Tokyo around that same time. He's especially known for his all-male version of Swan Lake. (Wow, Fakir. XD)

My own thoughts

-SFjhushfusdhg make up your mind, Mytho! Rue or Tutu?!? XDD But seriously, at least he finally thanked her properly. (AND finally called her "Ahiru" at the very end!) Yame Shouko says it felt like Mytho and Ahiru's conversation tied up some emotional loose ends from the final episode.

-"Fakir sometimes sees cows and alligators flying in the sky, so I'm worried." LOL, he still remembers that. XD

-I'm also very amused that you could probably find hints for nearly every pairing in this (Mytho/Ahiru, Mytho/Rue, Mytho/Fakir, Fakir/Ahiru, Autor/Fakir, Autor/Rue...LOL).

-As for whether we should take this as canon, I guess you could say it is and it isn't. (Personally I like the idea of Fakir becoming a full-time writer rather than continuing ballet. :/)
The more active members of the Japanese fandom seem to have known about this for quite a while, though. I've already read a fanfic that takes place after it...but more often I see people just mentioning that they've written a sequel or something. Generally they seem to only put a few of their fanfics up on their websites and then have a massive list of doujinshi that shows they're selling the rest. So what I've found is probably only a fraction of what's really out there.

Q&A Session

Aside from the drama, there were some other events such as giving out presents, the seiyuu reciting some lines (it seems Yuu Urata, Autor's seiyuu, had a lot of fun with this, even imitating Fakir at one point saying "I'll protect Mytho!!"), and a Question and Answer Corner with Ikuko Itoh.

The website for the event used to have a page with details on this, but it seems they closed it on July 5, 2004 because they had promised to only keep it up for one month. Argh, why?!

-Question: Does Ahiru still look like a duckling or has she grown?
Answer: "It's better not to think realistically about a duck's lifespan in the Tutu world." "She might even live to be 100 years old."

-Question: "Fakir has a strange hairstyle that looks like a crow is sitting on his head; does he have it tied back?"
Answer: "He has it tied back with a string you can't see."

There were questions about what it was like recording the voices for the anime, and it seems that at first the seiyuu were recording along with video, but soon it was just images, then only black-and-white images. Some days they had no pictures at all to go by. Director Satou said "We only recorded with the anime on episode 2." So for everything else, the seiyuu had to just use their imaginations. O_O

And apparently the seiyuu for Ahiru, Autor, and Uzura had to work overtime a lot. XD

In closing, I must say THANK YOU to these fans for writing their reports or else we wouldn't know anything about this story. And THANK GOD for the internet. *__*
