Betrayal is the willful slaughter of hope.

Is there a time limit on how long people are allowed to talk about something? A sort of fandom statute of limitations; if you got away with XYZ for 3 years you get away with & everyone forgives you. Who knows, maybe that isn’t a terrible idea, but I don’t think MsScribe or her friends should get to decide how long people are allowed to be hurt or ( Read more... )

I don't know any of the people directly affected by this train wreck, but I genuinely feel sorry for them. I can't believe this.

At the same time, I'm a little rueful. I keep thinking that I ought to quit fandom_wank (a guilty pleasure) cold turkey now because nothing can ever top this. Unless maybe Hermione actually does end up with Harry in Book 7, that is.

I refuse to let people like msscribe make me quit believing in people.

I think that's a good sentiment, and one we should all take to heart. Although, probably anyone involved in this mess might have trouble relating to it at the moment. :/

Dude I can't even imagine anything topping this. The bad thing is that I don't think it's quite over yet, I just have a feeling. :\

Oh I agree. I'm enjoying seeing people make amends around the fandom though. I'd be lying if I didn't say that I wouldn't blame people if they were more cynical/jaded from now on.

Are we taking bets on how long until Charlotte's real identity comes out? There will be more wank then, I'm sure. Though I have the impression some principals may already have good guesses.

Oh I'm sure we might see a bit of wank but most of what she's written has been confirmed from others like eljuno, oulangi, angua9, heidi8, pw, etc. So yeah even if she is "outted", she was still correct about almost all of it.

Well, look at real history, the holocust, the stolen generation, white settlement of indegenious people's countries. WW1, WW2. Noone forgets, people are still hurt, still fighting for acknowledgement, still fighting for forgivness. But it gets easier with ever generation, not because they forgive and forget, but because they were never there to experience it.

It's the same in fandom.

I didn't want to bring those up for fear of invoking Godwin and also my annoyance of getting accused of zomg comparing a sockpuppet scandal to the horror of the holocaust!(cause you know someone would have said it) I don't have the time nor the patience at this point.

omg no. Sockpuppets are nothing compared to the horror history has to offer. But the princible is the same whether governments and dictators and war is involved. To feuding neighbours and communities... to fandom.

It's hard to forgive and forget no matter how small or big the wank is in RL or Fandom.

One of my beta readers was in a totally different area of fandom and something like this happened to him. He's a programmer so he created his own HP website with message boards to discuss the books and eventually uploaded PDFs of my fics. He had a nice little community, people became friends, and then this girl up and died. Her friend posted about this and everyone who'd been her friend was simply devastated. People comforted each other and talked about their fond memories of her and my beta, Nick, called her parents (personal contact info was visible only to him as the owner of the site) to offer his condolences to them and tell them what a good friend their daughter had been and what a smart, sweet, well-loved girl she was in his community ( ... )

What is up with the fake death/psuecide things people pull online? Is it because they don't give a shit about the friends they've made? Do they think that real people don't exist behind these monitors? I mean I know I'm not the nicest person in the world(and that probably ain't changing soon) but damn. :\

Evidently she just wanted to bow out of the community and didn't want to say that she was just tired of HP fandom, so she created a sockpuppet who said she'd died. It wasn't very complex or finessed. Certainly not along the lines of what we saw in the CL expose.
