When there is trap set up for you...

We've been doing short story cycles in English this semester, so it's neat to see an author's quirks, unintentional or not, poke through and show themselves in completed stories. I'm not used to reading single authors so much that I notice long-running themes in their works ( Read more... )

Sasuke doesn't attach honorifics to names? :O
I never knew this.
ELABORATION IS REQUIRED.

Nah, he doesn't -- he's never used -chan, -kun, -sensei, or even -sama. Even Orochifag he only calls by his name. IDK if they're meant to all be honorifics, or attachments that denote affection (see -chan, -kun, hell, even -sensei), but I've never seen him use them. And is it just me, or does he only use Naruto's name when he's properly pissed at him? Usually he only uses insults, when he's pissy, but not proper angry; then it's all 'hissNarutohiss'.

he also uses naruto's name when he's having sex aurrai March 25 2011, 08:50:33 UTC
HAHA EMBER'S GONNA GET THAT SUBJECT LINE IN HER INBOX AND BE LIKE WTF WHEN IS IT EVER APPLICABLE TO SAY THAT oh i don't know why i thought this was surprising.

I haven't watched the anime in so long… almost a year, some say.

I'm really curious about this because I thought honorifics (or those name attachment things idek and I'm supposed to be a linguistics major) were standard. Korean has the same thing, and while it's possible to drop them, I mean… I've never thought to? So I wonder about whether this is common in Japanese or if this is a Sasuke thing. It's never talked about in canon, that's all, and it's interesting.

But he calls Itachi niisan, doesn't he?
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

THIS IS NEVER NOT AN APPROPRIATE SUBJECT LINE, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, FUCK THIS NOISE. *____* EMBER WOULD UNDERSTAND.

ALSO, THAT WAS IN MY HEAD AS I WAS TYPING THE PREVIOUS COMMENT. I HAVE STILL NOT LEARNED MY LESSON, BECAUSE THERE WAS ME THINKING, NAH, THIS IS A SERIOUSFACE COMMENT, LET'S NOT PUT THE SEX RIGHT IN AURRAI'S FACE, AND HOW THE FUCKING FUCK AM I STILL THINKING LIKE THAT, PFFFFFTTTT YOU LOSER SIRONA.

IN OTHER WORDS: YES. AND THEN IT'S GOING TO BE ALL 'HNNNNGGGGNARUTOHARDERNNNGGGHHHH'. BASICALLY.

I have actually not read the manga or seen the anime in months. I'm getting a little bored of it, tbh -- I THINK IT'S THE LACK OF NARUTO/SASUKE INTERACTION. But I can still remember the initial stuff.

I think it's a Sasuke thing. I think it's a way of distancing himself from the people around him, because if he just uses their name, then he doesn't have to be reminded of the connotations of the honorific and the connection that goes with it. Yes, he calls Itachi niisan, but that's before the deaths and Itachi going rogue ( ... )

I have issues about how thoughts are written in text. For a long time I was adamantly against using thoughts in my stories. I've relaxed a bit but I still, ignorantly, selfishly, judge a Writer's technique by the way they use thoughts.

I have this one Original Story where I couldn't decide if the main character was a boy or a girl, and since I was writing it in First Person, I didn't have to decide right away. Yet I kept writing not knowing what gender or sex the character was. Neither had I decided on a name. This character was very faceless for a time (by now this conflict has been resolve though, haha).

Like really, try writing a story not knowing whether the character is a boy or a girl. You'll see how much it matters, and what stereotypes you hold.

Augh, I can only imagine how complicated that must get. XD

I'm cool with thoughts just being in italics or whatever--my problem comes in when people start trying to use "--thoughts" to denote them--no quotes, because then they just blend into the narrative, and sometimes that's a useful tool, but mostly it's fucking annoying. (That's actually how speech is noted in Spanish, sometimes. It's really bothersome, fromt he perspective of someone who is used to having "this stuff" around thoughts and speech.)

... that sounds like a very interesting experience, whether writing or reading *_* (I've once written a short story in letter format where the reader -and one of the characters - found out at the end that the other character which they assumed male was actually female, but I always knew I was gonna do that, she had a face and everything.)

For me the most disturbing thing about writing back over stories is seeing how much of myself is in them. I find there are a lot of gender role conflicts, and I mean, some of these are stories I wrote back in high school, and some of the conflicts make me worry that the conflicts inside me are deeper than I know or want to know.

The ungendered character I wrote about before didn't have a birthday either, PUHAHA.

I find that trying to model a character after myself ends with the most unlike me character, while making a character specifically to be unlike myself often ends up being too much like me. :/ I think this probably says something about how I see myself, but I can never quite tell what it is.

Most of my characters don't have birthdays, but I that's more laziness. :/
