Homebirth complications?

Dec 26, 2010 22:15

Does anyone have a birth story of a homebirth where there was a complication or transfer. Involving either mom or baby, or both? Hemmorage, neonatal recusitation, heavy meconium, shoulder dystocia etc ( Read more... )

complications - mother, complications - baby, home birth

at my first birth I bled a lot. I honestly don't know that it was a hemmorage or if it was just a stinkin' lot of blood but it was enough to be worrisome, even to my midwife. she told me if I pass out she would call 911. being uninsured, I didn't want to end up at the hospital unless I REALLY needed it. I did my best to stay awake while my husband applied unsexy nipple stimulation due to my daughter being unable to breastfeed since she was still attached and the cord was jsut way too short. he did that until the cord stopped pulsing and we cut it and began to nurse. the midwife kept taking my blood pressure and I kept downing lots of fluids and some liquid chlorophyll. the bleeding stopped, my BP picked up, and everything was fine ( ... )

My son was born with meconium in my waters and shoulder dystocia and had absolutely no complications from either. My midwife and her assistant where completely awesome and I never worried. It took a couple minutes to get my little guy crying at first but he was just fine in the end.

I switched last minute (literally, 40w3d) from OBs to a midwife who would do a homebirth and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. All my children will be born at home. :)

Because they tend to select away from risk categories, complications can be rare. But they do happen.

I would like to mention that that midwife was EXTREMELY negligent, and is no longer licensed by the state of Texas for what happened.

Last I heard the midwives that oversee her were still protecting her. She was an instructor also.

It appears you're right, which majorly sucks. I knew there was a case and I thought it went better than it did. =/

The "short version" of my birth story da_shpoon December 27 2010, 09:38:04 UTC
The VERY short version of the birth story is: all was going really well, until I was fully dialated & it became clear that Gabriel was in a weird position. We did some maneuvers/etc & got him to move... And then he moved to ANOTHER weird position... So we got him to move again... And then again he moved into another weird position. Lather, rinse, repeat for a day & a half. Eventually we decided to try coached pushing to get mr stubborn out, but it was recommended that we do that in hospital because it can sometimes cause distress for the baby & if we agreed that if we had to transfer, we'd rather do it with a happy baby than a stressed one. So, we went to the hospital, where they strapped on a bunch of monitors, brought in the Machine That Goes Ping, ushered in a large herd of people, put me in stirrups & reenacted every scary birth scene from every movie & tv show EVER (minus the nasty doctors, most of mine were really nice! The first doctor was a real bitch & wanted to do a c-section for no apparent reason, so we ditched her & got a ( ... )

Forgot to mention, the "blood loss" was actually a whole litre of blood, so yeah I hemorrhaged... & not just a little bit either! One of the reasons my midwife wanted to transfer is because she thought I was going to hemorrhage, but I suspect that it was at least partially caused (or made worse) by the fact that they actually pulled the placenta out, instead of letting it come out naturally.

Both of us are now perfectly healthy & have been ever since we left the hospital! Gabe still has a few bruises & puncture wounds, but he's otherwise great. My mum managed to catch some nasty bug from the hospital though (she's better now)!

Cytotec is a drug used for ulcers. Off label OBs use it for induction and it placed in the vagina not anus.

I did not homebirth but I did birth at a birth center with a midwife however my labor did not go well at the end. Zen would not come down the birth canal and at the end I decided to be transferred to the hospital. When we got there I pushed him out but he wasnt breathing and they had to bring him back. I personally think my body knew something was wrong and told me to get help. Best decision I ever made! However I would birth at a birth center again in a heartbeat. Sometimes bad things happen and whatever happens is meant to be even death...
