I know Anne probably didn't cheat on Henry, but I just can't find much sympathy for her considering how she wilfully set out to break Henry's marriage, not to mention some of the nasty things she said about Catherine and how she treated Mary. She just doesn't come across as a very sympathetic woman for me. *shrug*
Heh, you sure do know a lot about the Tudors. Do you have a Ph.D or other degree in the subject?
...she probably made lemonade out of lemons and said, "okay fine, give me the crown then if you want me" (lol something to that effect, obviously not those words! ;))....but I think it's unfair and probably inaccurate to say she willingly set out to break his marriage
I thought it was generally agreed upon that she strongly wanted/pushed Henry to divorce Catherine?
Anyway, in my book anyone who openly commits adultery without showing any signs of feeling bad about it is outside my sympathies, and I can't change that. Not to mention the way Anne "preached" about morality to her own household, which I believe really happened...sounds hypocritical to me. So, I remain in my dislike of Anne.
Aw, you're finally watching season 2--yay! :D Though aww, I loved season 2 much better than season 1, it was in season 2 that I really fell for the show....I just think the story is much more exciting/compelling/epic in the second season, there are fewer extraneous storylines, etc (for example the random!gay fling of this season is actually somewhat relevant to the plot), etc. And best of all we get to see my girl MARY appear in a more significant role! As much as I like Catherine, I like Mary even more, and was especially excited to see her in this season because this part of her story is so rarely portrayed in film--it's usually glossed over completely
( ... )
Oh yes, I'll definitely keep watching, as I bought the DVD. ;-D There's a lot happening and it is exciting indeed, so I do like this season, too. Maybe my not-quite-there-enthusiasm is because of all the heartbreak of Catherine's situation
( ... )
Yep, I did refer to Catherine's lady in waiting indeed. Come on, one woman who can resist men! ;-)
Seriously! I was all like, "yay for her dissing Wyatt and wanting to wait until marriage/be a bride of christ!" only for her to sleep with him anyway--on the way to MASS no less! *rolleyes*
Heh, Cranmer hasn't annoyed me much yet, but I thought there was a strange duality in his character - first they show him as this stuttering, almost shy guy who smuggles his secret wife into the country, and then suddenly they show him bellowing angrily at the priests like a bigot...maybe I missed something during a bathroom break! :-DROFL! Yeah he does do that on the show, and BOTH sides of him annoy me equally! :p The truth was that he was a relatively modest guy, but a bigot nonetheless in religion as so many were in those days, sadly. But such were the times
( ... )
Oy, I have a lot to say on this question, and am too lazy to cut it down--so I'll post this in two parts! ;)
Part 1:
"Btw, can I ask, why do you like Mary the best?...The portrayal of her on the big screen that sticks the best to my mind is the one in "Elizabeth", where she's played by Kathy Burke. What did you think of it?Sure you can ask! :) I like Mary best because I find her story to be the most tragic and compelling-as sad and heartbreaking as Catherine's story is, Mary's is all the more so, being torn between her parents the way she was-I mean, divorces are often ugly, and the fact that the divorce of Mary's parents was so huge on a national and international scale, and so particularly nasty made it all the more traumatic. Just imagine, this girl grows up loved and as a priviliged princess, becomes the heir to the throne, has everything, and then loses everything just like that--her mother (from whom she is forcibly separated for the rest of her mother's life, and to whom she cannot even write eventually), her father's love,
( ... )
Ah yes, those nice directors who throw historical/canon accuracy to the wind because of artistic vision - been there. Joe Wright's DVD commentary on the 2005 Pride and Prejudice is poison for the Austen-lover's ears...
Don't apologise for your long replies, I'm long-winded myself when I get on the mood, and it's always nice when people are excited about something else than Big Brother! ;-)
Oh, I see, that makes sense. Yes, she did have a tragical life. :-( But I must say, you must be pretty young if you consider 37 years "old". ;-) Obviously, at that time it was, though. :-D
