I mean here's one ex. of the bad press: when I visited Oxford and rode the "Oxford Story" the Tudor part went like this: "The bad ebil Mary burned 3 people here, & then the good Queen Elizabeth came and founded a school here--yay!" You never would have known by that little version that Mary actually increased the University's income by THIRTY percent and founded TWO schools herself! Or that during the disputation/trial of these three guys the Oxford crowd was largely unsympathetic towards them anyway.
And ugh do NOT pay any attention to that travesty of a film "Elizabeth"--the whole thing is utter rubbish historically speaking, from the absurd gothic sets to the deliberately bad costumes (the director actually FORBID the costumers to do research, since to him the most important thing was his own artsy "vision" of the story! *rolleyes*), to the melodramatic EVERYTHING, etc--Kathy Burke's terrible and over-the-top portrayal of Mary is just one bad thing on the long list for the movie--do not pay any attention to it!
Instead I offer you the best version I've seen of Mary as queen, ironically enough from the movie "Lady Jane" (featuring a crazy!young Bellatrix Helena Bonham Carter), even though Jane is executed under Mary! (For sad political necesity--it's what happens when you are placed on the throne, then when your father participates in another rebellion to put you on the throne after he's already been pardoned). Here's a clip of Mary meeting with Jane after she's regained her throne:
Ah yes, those nice directors who throw historical/canon accuracy to the wind because of artistic vision - been there. Joe Wright's DVD commentary on the 2005 Pride and Prejudice is poison for the Austen-lover's ears...
Don't apologise for your long replies, I'm long-winded myself when I get on the mood, and it's always nice when people are excited about something else than Big Brother! ;-)
