I think what makes Dragonforce work is that they're so over the top as far as progressive metal bands go. Through the Fire and Flames itself is a great example of this: its so rambling and endless in its composition that it makes John Petrucci cry. Yet at the same time, its flawlessly executed.

It astonishes me that people's hands (and minds) can move -that- quickly! I mean, I'm no intellectual slouch, and I have my occasional bouts of relative coordination, but GOOD LAWD! O.O So, so very cool. My props to the band, and those brave enough to take them on- let alone win. ^_^

If you watch again, you'll see that during the slow-motion parts he's performing a little percussion trick called a Single Paradiddle*. He lets the tip of the stick *bounce* off of the pad just enough to let it fall to strike again in rapid succession; then he follows up with the other hand to fill out the rest of the rhythm. So on top of his electronics skills, he has some serious musical chops too. It's just unreal.

And Dragonforce? They're fucking amazing. Easily the most over-the-top progressive metal band there is. Dream Theater is another one (highly recommended).

(* - yeah, I had to look that up; I thought it was a "flam", but wasn't sure.)
