In a nutshell, the stock midi drum controller was wired up through a PC, and then through an XIM implementation that allows the PC to talk to the console. If you ask me, this really sounds like a job for an Atmega chip and a hacked Xbox controller, but I can't fault our hero here for getting the job done with such amazing results.
